Season 16. 1948/49

Season 16. 1948/49

Eric Boden , now in his fourth season as manager, lead his side to second in the league by mid-February. Our best season yet up to that point. Then a run of only three points from the remaining nine matches saw the team drop to sixth place.
By an odd coincidence, we were drawn against and beat both Twickenham and Crown & Manor twice, in four different cup competitions. In the Amateur Cup Crown & Manor were beaten 5-2, then Polytechnic 2-1 & Kings Langley 2-0 before being knocked out by Uxbridge (1-2). In the F. A. Cup, this time Crown & Manor were beaten 7-1 before being beaten 2-1 at Lower Mead by Wealdstone. In the London Senior Cup Woolwich Borough were defeated 8-1, then Twickenham, 3-2, before losing to Eton Manor 3-4. Our Middlesex Senior Cup run started with a 3-2 home win over Twickenham, we then played De Havilland. The first meeting was abandoned after 55 minutes due to fog , before Harrow won at the second attempt, 2-0. In the next round Wembley ended our interest in the knock out competitions for the season winning 2-1.
A great loss to the club off the field was suffered when Club chairman C. G. Norman died.
The goal scoring was lead by Alan Bridges with 20 goals followed by George Tyson with 18.
Our visit to Champions to be Cambridge Town didn’t go to plan as a coach break down on route halted the journey and was completed on an open back lorry!
The club applied to join the Corinthian League , but were not elected.
The reserves having won promotion to the Great Western League the previous season as runners up in diversion two , were now runners up in division one, only by goal average from Maidenhead United.
