Season 33. 1965/66

Ron Clack was the new manager at the start of the 1965/66 season. He had to build a team from scratch as all the senior players had left at the end of the previous season. Many of his signings were from his former club Hayes. We started the season quite well, the first three home league matches were a nil-nil draw with Wembley followed by wins over Wembley (2-1, Brown & Cole scored) and Tilbury (2-0 Borst and Evans scoring). The only point away from home in the first three games was at Hertford.
Cup exits at the first hurdle were a feature of the season. Harlow Town ended interest in the F.A. Cup winning 3-1. Barking romped to a 6-0 home win in the Amateur Cup. A trip to Finchley in the Middlesex Senior Cup ended 0-4 , whilst a couple wins in the London Senior Cup over Polytechnic (4-0) and Kingsbury Town (3-0) set up a home tie with Hampton that ended 0-3.
The next Athenian League win was not until January when we travelled to fellow strugglers Horsham and returned with a 3-2 win. We then suffered two heavy home defeats , one against a Chesham side that contained six ex Harrow players. They had also signed Peter Lavers and Billy McKay the previous summer but they had both departed before playing against their old club. A double over Wokingham with Underwood and Smith scoring home and away gave some hope to relegation battle. Then an away point at high flying Letchworth with Colin Davison saving a late penalty to ensure it finished 0-0 seemed to have turned a corner only to slip back into the relegation places in April.
Saving the best for last, a 5-1 home win over Eastbourne Town with Ted Lewis scoring a hat-trick and Dennis Smith two was followed up with a 1-0 home win over Redhill (Underwood). Relegation was avoided with a game to spare.
Top scorer was Ted Lewis with ten goals.
The F.A had given permission for the club to change is name in the summer to Harrow Borough Football Club.
