Now back in the Athenian League Division Two for the 1967/68 season. We had a new manager, former Harrow defender from the 1940’s Fred Avery. He had been manager at Wembley F.C. before returning to Earlsmead. The Club also had a new Secretary, Jim Rogers who would become Mr Harrow Borough, remaining as a club administrator for the next 46 years, holding various positions including President up to his death in 2003.
We had only played four league games by the beginning of December, with only a win over Marlow earning any points. Baldock Town were beaten in the F.A. Cup, Vic Brown scoring the only goal. Dennis Smith scored at Ware in the next round as Boro were beaten 4-1.
In the Amateur Cup, Polytechnic were beaten 2-0 with Graham Rowley and Vic Brown scoring. This brought Staines Town to Earlsmead for a tie that ended 0-0. In the replay Boro were on top form as Lance Wintle put Harrow ahead after twelve minutes, then Arthur Peel smashed in a second from a tight angle ten minutes later. Staines pulled a goal back from the penalty spot before David Flood headed home a Peter Jennings cross to complete the 3-1 victory. Edgware away on a Muddy White Lion ground was a classic cup tie. Lance Wintle put Harrow ahead midway through the first half as the visitors dominated. Edgware equalised early in the 2nd half and for a period had the Boro under a lot of pressure, only for Graham Rowley to score with two minutes remaining. There was still time for Peter Aldridge to make a crucial double save before full time. Hampton away was next in the 3rd qualifying round. The local paper described it as a scoreless “Cracker”. Harrow hit the woodwork twice and Arthur Peel had a goal disallowed for offside. In the replay Barry Brandford scored for Harrow inside three minutes and the lead was held until the final minute of the half when the visitors netted twice both from corners to win the tie 2-1.
The semi-final of the league cup was reached, a 7-2 win over Ruislip Manor after a 2-2 draw at Grosvenor Vale then a 3-0 win over Boreham Wood (3-0) set up a visit to Edmonton were Boro were beaten 5-1 in the semi-final.
