The Summer of 1968 saw a new manager arrive, former Corinthian Casuals player & football journalist Tony Williams, who had previously managed Epson & Ewell.
Peter Rogers was the new Treasurer, to start his tenure on the club board that still continues 52 years later as club chairman. If his father was known as Mr Harrow Borough, then Peter should be knighted as Sir Harrow Borough!
On the field Tony Williams had to start from scratch as all the first team players had left the club. A team of mostly young players was assembled; It would take them ten matches to win a match. Defeats in the F.A. Cup at Vauxhall Motors, Amateur Cup at home to Wingate, the League Cup at Boreham Wood and the first six league matches were all by at least two clear goals. So to win 6-3 at home to Edgware was quite a feat. Goal scorers were Tommy Johnston, Micky Lee, Clive Coast, John Wood, Arthur Peel and Tony Williams.
Boro won 3-1 at Eton Manor in the London Senior Cup followed by a 4-2 success in the next round against Kingsbury Town. Feltham ended interest for Harrow in all cup competitions with wins in both the London Senior (2-4) and the Middlesex Senior Cup (1-2).
A visit to Worthing was particularly disappointing as although trailing to an early goal, Ian Harvey scored on the stroke of half time only for the referee to rule he had blown for the interval before the ball had crossed the line. The match ended in a 1-0 defeat. The following week Aveley were beaten at Earlsmead as Clive Coast and Brian walker scored. This would be Tony Williams last match in charge as on being advised that the manager could no longer be a paid position, he left along with Arthur Peel. Reserve team boss Roy Churchill took over as caretaker manager. Churchill’s first three games in charge all ended in single goal defeats, his next three would all be drawn. The seventh was finally a win at Rainham Town by 5-4. The goals scored by Micky Lee (2), Clive Coast, Barry Wanless and Brian Tomkins.
Further wins over Eastbourne Town (4-3), Edmonton (3-1) and Ruislip Manor (4-1) could not save us from finishing bottom thus having to seek re-election to the league.
Top scorer was Tommy Johnson with 11 goals followed by Clive Coast on 9.
The league were concerned about the standard of our ground, also within the club there was a motion that would also have resulted in the club withdrawing from Senior Amateur Football.
The result of that motion was a vote of 50-49 in favour of continuing senior Football! The club were re-elected to the Athenian League and improvements would be made to the ground.
