Season 49. 1981/82

As early as June, preparations would raise expectations for the new season. Highly rated midfielder Eddie Stein left to sign for Dagenham and leaving the Daggers to sign for Boro in return were winger Steve Jones & striker George Duck. Our other major summer signing was a central defender from Hounslow, David Howell.
The season did not start as well as hoped, winning just one of the first five league matches. That win was impressive as Tony Doherty, Steve Emmanuel and George Duck twice scored in a 4-1 win at Hayes.
In the F.A. Cup a home win against Oxford City (4-2, Pearce 2, Jones & Manoe) started a run to the 4th qualifying round for the first time in 20 years. Maidenhead United were beaten at York Road 2-0 (Pearce, Duck)before being drawn away to Wealdstone in the 3rd qualifying round.
Wealdstone were top of the Southern League, Boro’s build up had not been ideal as we were on the receiving end of a 5-2 beating by Woking on the Tuesday before. Amid a raucous atmosphere Boro were clinical, storming to a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes as an early strike by former Lower Mead favourite George Duck and a bullet header from the edge of the penalty area by Dave Howell had the Stones rocking. Nigel Johnson reduced the arears for the home side, but there was no stopping Harrow as Dave Pearce and another Duck strike wrapped up a memorable victory.
The cup run was ended at Claremont Road as Hendon won by a single goal, Boro were a shadow of the side that had beaten Wealdstone. Les Currell saved a first half penalty. but despite a late fluffy of goal attempts a first ever first round proper tie would be denied.
The F.A. Trophy draw also paired Boro with Wealdstone. Having been 1-0 down, Steve Emmanuel with a diving header & Dave Pearce had scored for Boro and they were leading in the final minute only for future Boro winger Clevere Forde to grab a last gasp equaliser. The replay at Lower Mead was a disaster for Boro as Ray Metz was sent off and the home side ran out 4-0 winners.

League form was not as good as was expected and by the end of February the team were 6th from bottom. Knocked out of the Middlesex Senior Cup at Hillingdon Borough 3-1 (Howell) and the London Senior Cup by Boreham Wood 3-2 after extra time (Harris 2) after previously beating Staines Town 2-1 (Duck 2)
We were now without any cup commitments and the form that had shown promise finally materialised as we would remain unbeaten the final thirteen league matches. Wins against all the top three sides, Champions Leytonstone 3-1 on their own ground (Jones, Forde, Pearce) Second place Sutton United home and away (1-0, Manoe, 2-0, Emmanuel & Pearce) and third place Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 (Forde & Pearce) in the final match of the season at Loakes Park.
The leading scorer was George Duck with 30 goals followed by Dave Pearce with 19.
