Season 58. 1990/91

No doubt Tom McAllister’s connections in the full-time pro game were the reasons for Harrow beginning 1990-91 with friendlies against no less than three league clubs: West Ham’s first eleven (1-9), Chelsea (0-2) and Tottenham Hotspur (0-1). But when the league campaign began, his much-changed side struggled, big time. Harrow lost their first five games and, with only two points on the table after eight games, coupled with a disastrous FA Cup exit at Edgware Town, McAllister handed in his resignation. His replacement was Peter Lawrence, but things took a while to improve. It wasn’t until league game number 14 that the first win was posted, and at the end of 1990 Harrow were rock bottom with only 12 points from 24 matches. However, 26 points from the remaining 18, combined with bad form from Leyton-Wingate and Barking, saw Harrow to safety, and the season ended with a bang: still in danger on the last day of the season, Harrow won 5-0 away at Windsor & Eton (Paul Ripley 3, Eamon O’Connor, Steve Conroy) thus ensuring another season in the Premier Division. League champions, as Vauxhall-Opel ended their sponsorship, were Redbridge Forest.

There were other cup exits at the first hurdle: Fisher Athletic removed Harrow from the FA Trophy; Met Police from the league cup; Enfield from the Middlesex Senior Cup. The club lasted two rounds in the short-lived Loctite Cup, and it was three rounds in the Premier Inter-League Cup before Harrow exited, at Dover.
