Hartlepool made 2 changes from the original starting line up against Barnard Castle, on the flank Andrew Woodward was working and was replaced by the evergreen Phil Moore and on the bench Jon Osbourne was also working so Steve Ward returning from injury covered the front row. Chis Graham made his full first team debut at hooker for the unavailable Pool captain Andrew Small. Jason Norman took over captain duties for the day.

Pool lost the toss played up the bank first half, Barnard Castle kicked off and a good take from Chris Graham saw pool go on the offence. However after 2 minutes, Barney opened the scoring with a a fine try. Following a catch and drive from the line out, the ball was passed along the line and the winger scored in the corner with the conversion kicked Barney lead 7-0. The home side continued to press and a good tackle by Liam Lester stopped a certain try.

Pool were then penalised for being offside and the lead was extended by 3 points, 10-0.

Pool were dealt a blow after 10 minutes when Patrick Wilson received treatment to an eye injury. Barney drove the scrum on and attacked blind and great passage of play saw a score under the post. 17-0 Wilson went off to hospital to get his eye stitched and was replaced by Anth Burgon moving in the centres and Kegen Thomas moving from centre to stand off.

Pool finally got into the game after 15 minutes and pressured the home defence for 5 minutes, Adam Ainley made break of was felled with a late tackle which saw the offending player yellow carded and 2 minutes later ill discipline in the Barney side saw them reduced to 13 players for being off side. Pool attacked and Ainley powered over to bring Pool back into the game, Thomas converted 17-7.

From the kick off, Pool were penalised for being off side and Barney kicker extended the lead to 20-7. Pool looked like they had scored a second try with Davey White and Neil Stead held up over the try line. Pool then knocked the ball on in the next attack and the ball was cleared.

Barney back to full compliment of players scored the next try with a minute remaining to lead 27-7 at half time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Pool got back into the game.From a scrum, Jason Norman picked up and made yards, Howie Murray fed Kegen Thomas who in turn passed to Martyn Ryan, Ryan then beat the first defender and kicked ahead to outsprint the full back to touch down wide out 27-12. Adam Ainley limped off and was replaced by Sam Fleet with Jason Norman moving into the backs.

Pool continued to press and excellent defence from the home team kept Pool at bay. However with 13 minutes remaining Pool scored their third try through Martyn Ryan who out paced the home defence to score in the corner. 27-17. Pool prob Neil Stead was injured and was replaced by Steve Ward to make his seasonal debut.

With 10 minutes remaining, Barney scored the all important next try, poor tackling in the Pool backs led to the home side scoring under the post which was duly converted 34-17.

2 late tries which were both converted gave the score a slightly flattering look of 48-17 to Barney Castle. The deserved win for the home side gives them an outside chance of avoiding relegation. For Pool, Chris Graham starred at hooker on his debut along with Martyn Ryan on the right wing with 2 fine tries.
