An impressive first half performance saw Pool defeat Whitley Bay Rockcliff 57-10 at Mayfield Park with Lewis Wilson scoring a fantastic 20 point haul.

With several players returning to the fold, coaches Lewis Wilson & Andy Cummins had a genuine selection headache ahead of this fixture for arguably the first time this season.

Pool won the toss and elected to play down the Mayfield Park bank first . The opening five minutes saw Rockliffe on top with their strong forward runners asking questions but Pool were defending well with Steve Cole and Jack Riley in the thick of the action.

Pool went ahead after six minutes , the ball was cleared up the pitch by the visitors and Tazz Pelser caught the kick and brought the ball with interest. Once he was stopped, prob Anth Harvey carried the ball well and two further carries saw the Northumbrian defence stretched and the ball was passed along the backs with Harry Mayes finishing well for the opening try which Lewis Wilson converted. 7-0.

The home side shortly doubled the lead , a line out 10 metres from the visitors try line , was over thrown but Anth Harvey reacted first and took the ball forward , the forwards then drove forwards before the ball was quickly passed from 9 and 10 and stand off Ben Clarke stepped his opposite man for the 2nd try. Lewis Wilson making no mistake with conversion 14-0 .

In a purple period for the Mayfield Park side, from the kick off, the ball didn't go. From the resultant scrum ,Pool worked an opening on the left hand side of the pitch and Owen Samuel broke free and looked likely to score but his kick bounced out 5 metres out. Captain Jon Carney rose in the line out and stole the opposition ball before diving over for Pool's third try . 21-0.

Within 25 minutes , it was mission accomplished with the bonus point secured. Pool went on the offensive and Tazz Pelser kicked over the defence and he was about to catch his kick and with with 10 metres from the try line and he was unceremoniously pulled back and a penalty try was awarded and the lively full back yellow carded.28-0.

Pool were playing with confidence and ran from their own 22 metres line and all the backs handles before Owen Samuel who made 40 metres with a blistering run before he was tackled into touch 10 metres out with a superb covering tackle.

Five minutes before half time, Anth Harvey who was having a fine game , stole the line line out ball and several forward drives , saw Tazz Pelser release the backs and all the backs handled before Tyler Hall stepped from his wing to finish in some style for the fifth try. 35-0

On the stroke of half time, a period of pressure by the Northumbrian's saw them score a deserved first try of the afternoon , their forwards caused problems with the direct approach and several phases later the number scored from close range . 35-5.

The second half ,saw the visitors dominate the first five minutes and Pool eventually repealed the attacks and slowly worked their way up the field . A penalty kick by Ben Clarke brought play 20 metres from the try line and Pool attacked from the line out and Ben Clarke exploited a gap to sail through a gap and off loaded to Harry Mayes who finished in the corner for the 6 try. 40-5 .

Pool extended the lead, when the kick off didn't go ten metres and Pool elected for a scrum. The backs attacked again and Dave Chester combined with the backs to break free and showed great pace to out pace the defence to score under the posts for the 7th try. 47-5. Lewis converted the flanker tries. 47-5.

A yellow card for player coach Lewis Wilson for a breakdown offence , reduced Pool to 14 players and the visitors put the home side under the cosh as the attacked with vigour which saw Dave Chester and Jon Carney tackling well. Pool survived the onslaught and returned to full compliment of players before Jack Riley was yellow carded for dissent and Pool were back down to 14 players.

Pool were forced to dig deep and defend for ten minutes as the visitors continued to press for a second try however the Pool defence was well organised.

To rub salt into the visitors wounds , Pool soaked up the pressure and Ben Clarke made a scintillating break who linked up with Anth Harvey in support who passed to Lewis Wilson for the 8th try. 52-5.

From the kick off, Steve Cole made a great take and made 30 metres with a powerful run , Taz Pelser then fed Phi Stephenson who ran a great Line. Stephenson run was stopped with a great tackle by the full back but Ben Clark was in support to pass to Lewis Wilson for his second try of the afternoon and Pool's 9th try. 57-5.

Rockliife scored a deserved 2nd try to finish the scoring and end the match 57-10 .

The victory saw Pool move up a position and outside of the relegation zone. Pool will be looking to continue the good vain of form when they travel to Acklam on the 4th January.
