Rovers were well represented in the Durham County under 15 squad with six players in the match day 22. Three made the starting 15 with Mia Simpson at prop, Sophie Derbyshire at Openside, and Nicole Johnson at Full back.
The game started at a frantic pace with Durham stamping their authority from the start. Dominant in the scrum and in the rucks Durham raced to a 15 point lead through well taken tries.
Sophie made lots of strong runs backed up by Mia and Nicole looked dangerous in attack and solid in defence. Durham scored again before half time with Sophie converting a couple.
Changes were made at half time with Toban coming on in the second row and Amy on at out side centre. Mia and Nicole made way after a solid first half.
Durham continued to score freely with their pace out wide opening up Cumbria regularly. Ellie then came on for the last 15 minutes at 10 and moved the ball superbly which created more chances.
The final score was 46-0 to the Durham girls. A mature performance with a good balance of power and physicality up front and some impressive pace and handling in the backs. We are pleased to say that all of the Rovers girls played their part in the victory.
This will be a massive confidence boost for our talented players and hope this can influence our team. Our next club game is the national cup against Ripon. We have teamed up with Horden for the national cup and with Horden providing a couple of county players we are hopeful of progressing in the cup.
The next Durham county game is a couple of weeks time at Tynedale and this will be a much tougher test for team Durham. Places in the squad are not secure and the girls will have to train hard to keep their places.
Any new players who would like to join our girls only teams are more than welcome. No matter what your ability you will be made to feel welcome and part of the team/club. We have teams for year 7 to year 13 and will soon be developing a ladies team. Rugby is a great sport to get into. Please get in touch for more information.
