It turned out to be unlucky 13th for the Colliery as they fell to defeat in a must win game against Parkgate, at the Jones and co recreational ground. It was a warm but very windy afternoon and both sides took time to settle. It took until the 13th minute for any keeper to be tested, and it was Sam Jepson who made the first save. Mark West then harried the Parkgate defence chasing a through ball which only just cleared the cross bar and went out for a corner. On 21 mins the home side should have taken the lead, Jack Barnett put in an inviting cross for West who unmarked sent his header straight at the keeper. Eight minutes later and another good chances for the Colliery, Josh Davies put in another cross which was met by West at the far post but his header was blocked by the keeper much to West’s dismay. But such is football that if you don’t take your chances you get punished and that’s how it panned out with Zac Khalifa and Nathan Swadells getting two goals in a six minute spell just before half time.
It was imperative that the home side scored as soon as possible after half time, but just three minutes in and Mack Collinson took advantage of a poor punch from Jepson and fired the ball home from twelve yards out. A couple of minutes later and it could have been worse for the home side as an effort came back of the underside of the bar and bounced away. Adam Colton was then put through by Davies but the shot went wide of the post. Jepson then produced another good save before a well struck free kick from twenty yards out by Davies gave the Colliery a lifeline. However the home side never really put enough pressure on the Parkgate defence, only having an offside goal disallowed and another West effort that was easily saved.
Four consecutive defeats have seen the Colliery drop into the bottom two, and we have to stop the rot somehow. The last three games have seen us having good opportunities that have been wasted leaving us with that what if feeling. At East Yorkshire Carnegie we miss a penalty and hit the bar before the home side open the scoring. Last week we miss a great chance at 2-1 to level matters and this week we have two great chances to get on the score sheet before Parkgate score. With Grimsby Borough (top of league if they win their games in hand) and Winterton Rangers current leaders, our next two league games we certainly have a tough fight on our hands, let’s hope we can get a victory over Swallownest in the cup on Tuesday night to give us a confidence booster.
