After our game on Saturday we will have completed half our fixtures already and its not yet the end of October. If you had said after the Tom Brogan game back in August we would be in 2nd place in the league at this stage then Bren and myself would not have believed you. But after Tuesday nights victory in 2nd we are, and although other sides have games in hand they have to win them and we still have not played Clay Cross who are in third. Our opponents this weekend are Sherwood Colliery who lay 4th from bottom of the league. We played them back in August where we recorded a 5-2 win although the scoreline did flatter us. We were cruising at 3-0 but then conceeded 2 quick goals which left us hanging on, and Sherwood going flat out for an equlizer. However a defensive error let us extend our lead and a minute later we sealed the game but not without a scare. Since then they have had two victorys over Welbeck and Thoresby while the other seven games have ended in defeat. Although they have tasted defeat their latest results have only seen them lose by the odd goal, 1-0 at Glapwell, 3-2 at Clay Cross both sides in the top half of the table. Their latest result was a 2-1 defeat at the improving Bentley so it points to a far tougher game from when we last met.
We go into the game on the back of three straight wins, the latest a fine 2-1 away victory at Ollerton. We went a goal down early on but fought back for Billy to get an equlizer. We then had two great chances to take the lead but a mix of good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the scores level. The second half saw Ollerton push forward in search of a winner but they never threatened to score. On our part we kept going and their keeper was called into action on several occasions. It looked like the score would remain at 1-1 when in the final minute of stoppage time Tom Padgett beat the static Ollerton defence to latch on to a through ball and calmly beat the keeper. A great end to a fine performance and I hope Padgetts dad saw the goal as five minutes earlier he had asked me "how longs our Tom been on ". We know how Ollerton must feel as the same thing happened to us against Kiverton a few weeks back, its never a good way to lose a game. However against Kiverton we were worth a point, but this time I thought we deserved the victory. Their keeper had more saves to make, and after the first twenty minutes when Lath had to make one save and pick the ball out the net, all he had to do was pick ups, backpasses and practice his goal kicks. Ollertons finishing was woeful and the times they tried to be the hero and score, instead of picking out a team mate in a better position, was numerous. On our part a special mention to Corny and Brew - I thought both were impressive on the night, Corny slotting into Nudges position after he went off early with an injury and Brew at left back having to deal with Ollertons best player on the night. The defence again was solid and Jordans overlaps in the 2nd half nearly got him a goal with two splendid efforts - Everyone deserves praise for their efforts because when we play with the passion and desire like Tuesday we are a match for any side in the division.
