Swifts lined up without Lionel Ainsworth, Sam Carter & Dan Walker - Swifts had also seen the departures of Chris Gregan, Tommy Davis & Jeremy Arthur meaning the squad was light and Assistant Manager Alan McCormack was registered ahead of the game with the League leaders.
McCormack was named amonst the substitutes alongside Ifeanyi David who had impressed for the U23 Development team in recent matches.
Aveley started strongly and had the ball in the Swifts net after 9 minutes but thankfully the Referees' Assistant signalled offside. Swifts went close when a cross from Joe Claridge was headed wide by Jack Adlington-Pile (12 minutes).
Aveley continued to press forward and another offisde decision saw an Aveley player pick up the ball and then tumble to the ground as Callum Chafer tried to retrieve the ball - Chafer for some reason getting a yellow card for this 25th minute incident whilst the Aveley player went unpunished?
Swifts endured a period of defensive activity as the leaders sought to break the deadlock with Aveley making regular use of the bombardment of long throws from Jason Ring seeking out the giant forward George Sykes - Swifts fans will remember his brother Josh played for us in 2016/17 season.

Aveley picked up the pace after the break and Darren Phillips was yellow carded in the 55th minute. On 57 minutes Southend loanee Jon Benton unleashed an effort that rattle the Swifts crossbar. Three minutes later the divisions leading scorer Alex Akrofi broke through clean on goal and looked certain to score but Callum Chafer grabbed the ball at his feet.
Adam Topley was harshly booked in the 66th minute for what looked like a 50/50 tackle but the Referee deemed otherwise!
The only goal of the game came on 73 minutes - unsurprisingly it was another long throw from Ring that led to the goal with George Sykes getting a flick onto the throw - there is uncertainty about whether it was an own goal but we gave it to him as befits membership of the Centre Forward club.
Alan McCormack (who had replaced Karl Kayembe on 71 minutes) nearly levelled for Swifts when his 25 yard volley went narrowly wide on 77 minutes - sadly his goalscoring debut for Luton earning him the SkyBet Goal of the Month in August 2017 was not repeated on his Swifts debut!
Fans favourite Dylan Logan was belatedly introduced for Darius Ghinea with 11 minutes remaining but Swifts were unable to break down a resolute Aveley side and Alex Stephenson received a yellow card for dissent on 85 minutes.
