Holbrook RFC moved to second place in Sussex 3 West after a hard fought win against Brighton III. Bolstered by their convincing win over Chichester III in their last game, Holbrook started well with an early try from Dave Smart – his first in his debut season for the club. This was followed by a classic “pick and go” try from the back of the scrum by skipper Simon Loader taking Holbrook to a 10 – 0 lead. An experienced and heavier Brighton team were not to be underestimated, with ball in hand they were able to punch holes in the Holbrook defence and score a try talking the score to 10 - 5 with just under 15 minutes gone. The remainder of the first half was a fairly even battle that saw Holbrook fail to take full advantage of the potential of their youthful and more mobile squad.
After the half-time break, the rain began to fall even heavier making conditions difficult for both sides and Brighton soon capitalised on some poor Holbrook handling to incept a pass and score under the posts, taking the score to 10 – 12 with the conversion. Now under pressure, Holbrook lost composure and Brighton were able to scoop up loose ball and run another try into the left corner from the just inside the 22m line. The score was 10 -17 with the last quarter of the game left to go.
Regaining a little composure, Holbrook were awarded a penalty and kicked for an attacking lineout deep into the Brighton 22. From the lineout Holbrook moved the ball out wide for Oli Harris to score under the posts with Tom Lee adding the conversion. The game was tied 17 all and Brighton were looking the stronger side and continued testing the Holbrook defence.
With only 5 minutes to go, an attacking kick from Brighton was caught by the Holbrook full-back Adam Davies 10 metres from the Holbrook try line. The very pacey Davies then ran the full length of the pitch, jinking through the stunned Brighton defence to score under the post. Tom Lee added the conversion taking the final score to 24 – 17 and a hard fought Holbrook win.
Holbrook skipper Simon Loader commented on his team’s performance, “The guys stuck at it through poor conditions and showed real heart, especially in the closing minutes of the game. We narrowly lost our first couple of games, but securing back to back wins in our last two games and moving up to second in the league has created real positive momentum around the club.”
The next league game for Holbrook is at home against Horsham III on Saturday 16th November, kick-off 2:30pm, spectators welcome at The Holbrook Club in North Health Lane for this local derby.
