Lacy finally managed a win against Tenbury United in a scrappy affair played out in difficult conditions at the Hince Arena. Lacy have failed to beat this Tenbury side over the last few years but took advantage of their weakened team with a spirited display. Louis Catley was of course missing following last weeks unfortunate leg break, therefore Neil Sheehan stepped in at right back and Will Morrall came into midfield with Jean-Luc Alvarez injured. Scott Turner also came into the squad on the bench following his fine displays for the reserve side.
Lacy started brightly, with widemen Liam Campbell and Chris Freddi enjoying the space created by James Upcott and Dale Bowkett in midfield. Campbell saw a low drive go inches wide before Freddi doubled his seasons goal tally when his signature whipped corner from the left eluded the visiting keeper and went directly into the top corner. Upcott went close minutes later and Freddi saw a mis hit shot scrambled away just before halftime.
The home defence stood firm dealing with the few attacks thrown their way. Steve Cuss and Ryan Rowlett busied themselves when required with Cuss in particular making a few telling tackles to protect Keeper Ollie Meadow who was only needed on a couple of occasions in the first 45 minutes. Neil Sheehan at right back combined well with Upcott going forward and left back Elliott Thomas supported Campbell in a couple of forays. Will Morrall and Joe Griffiths both showed their determination to break up play in the middle of the park which allowed Bowkett and Upcott the freedom to roam and support both wingers.
On 50 minutes Bowkett left the field with a knee injury being replaced by Scott Turner who immediately looked dangerous with his direct play. However on 65 minutes Turner went down following a 50-50 challenge and was unable to continue. Initial fears regarding the injury to his knee appear to be unfounded, however he did break two ribs and will be sidelined for several weeks.
Dev Saunders replaced Turner and managed to get involved quickly, the young winger ended up putting in a good shift and may have been rewarded with a goal after a fine interchange with Campbell, only to see his effort saved when through with the keeper to beat. Saunders can however take great pride from his performance having played admirably in difficult conditions. Freddi claimed his brace on 67 minutes when skipper Upcott lofted a sublime through ball to him from halfway. Freddi showed great determination with his run and to the surprise of his teammates actually challenged the advancing keeper in a 50-50 to win the ball and slot home form 10 yards.
Although two goals to the good Lacy struggled for the remainder of the game and when Campbell picked up a thigh strain he was unable to leave the field as both substitutes had been used. Tenbury looked to push forward as the game progressed and with the home side unable to retain possession they conceded a goal when a shot was deflected off Morrall past the hapless Meadows. On the two occasions when Lacy did manage an attack Campbell’s low drive was well saved and Thomas was unlucky following a persistent run on the left when his shot hit the side netting
With just minutes remaining Meadows literally saved the day with an incredible standing leap when he managed to palm a close range header over the bar. Although not pretty the squad showed true spirit to take the points and will look forward to the next game away at Malvern 21 next Saturday.
