Town started 2024 away at a very strong Retford United side looking to get the year off to the perfect start. It couldn't have gone much worse!
The visitors started the game the much better of the two sides with Abdul Asamoah having the perfect chance to open the scoring after just thirty seven seconds. Horbury's #10 was played through with just the keeper to beat but unfortunately couldn't find the corners to score. It didn't take Town much longer to go in front however, as Sam Kyeremeh cut inside and smashed one through the keepers legs.
Town enjoyed spells in the opening fifteen gaining a lot of joy down either flank to get themselves in good positions but the home side found themselves level with a defensive error at the back trying to play out of trouble. From that moment, Retford seemed to enjoy a bit more ball and carved out a couple opportunites.
A second and a third followed in quick succession for the hosts around the half hour mark. The second came from a great ball from the Retford captain to find Liam Owen in the box and the third was a finish worthy of winning any game through Josh Nodder. A scissor kick from twenty yards out gave the keeper no chance.
As with the first half, Town started the much better of the two sides and carved out several opportunities in the opening five minutes but a lack of conviction in front of goal saw these go wasted. The closest Town came in the second half was a header against the bar.
Town were punished for all the missed opportunities to go 4-1 down before a fifth was added with a tidy first time finish after a clearance from the keeper.
A scoreline which certainly didn't reflect how Town played at times but at this level, you have to show conviction and be clinical in front of goal or you can be on the end of a drubbing. This result certainly showed that.
Staveley Miners Welfare await Town next.
