35 over game. Conditions bright but chilly, dry. Angus, Jim, Bill, David O’Connor & Bearded Josh unavailable, but close to a TCL team.
This was our only friendly warm up before the first TCL game. Chikmark won the toss and chose to bat. We would have fielded anyway.
Our bowling was generally accurate (at least in the first half of the innings) but not penetrating. Sam and Josh Haines restricted their openers to around 3 an over without threatening to get them out. Rick came on first change, good captaincy that, and deceived them into thinking the pressure was off. For a glorious period Rick was our top wicket taker of 2015. Christy bowled the spell of the game, 1 for 10 off 7. But after an over when Rick went for a few boundaries their scoring rate went up and we looked flat in the field. James came on for Rick, trying out his new round arm action with moderate success and 1 wicket. Harry bowled a few good overs without luck and Tom O (medium pace) and Callum (long hops and leg breaks) bowled out the innings, with 2 wickets each but quite expensive. Toby took a stumping off Callum, but some of our fielding was poor and we lacked energy. By the end they had set us 165 to win, and overall we gave them a few more runs than they should have had. After the game Toby discovered their scorer had too, but it was too late by then!
Our batting never quite happened. Nobody looked good. Even Christie, our top scorer on 51, never looked in form. Tom O was undone by a ball that did not bounce and Paul went LBW to a straight one he missed. James scratched around in 2nd gear, eventually getting tired and removing himself on 40 to let the younger crowd do the work. Callum for once failed and no one else got more than a few. Heading into the last over, the last pair of Sam and Rock needed 15, cue ugly swipes and Sam was caught at fine leg.
Later Toby noticed errors in the score book that suggested perhaps we only needed three off the last over, but who knows.
Despite the result it was a good warm up, almost every had both a bat and a bowl and losing keeps us humble.
