Hyndland RFC vs Moffat RFC

Fraser Cowie17 Oct 2021 - 15:33

Hyndland Victorious!

Hyndland kickstarted their season with a comprehensive victory over Moffat in the latest round of West Division 3 fixtures.

With player numbers improving in recent weeks, the club were in the fortunate position of being able to name a strong squad of 22. This saw the team began confidently, battering the Moffat defence with wave after wave of attack which was rewarded with a try for no.8 Nicky Gillan.

To Moffat's credit, they responded with a converted try of their own after an inventive kick and chase from their standoff, however this was the last occasion where the Hyndland try-line would be threatened for some time.

Hyndland quickly recovered their composure to get back into opposition territory and retake the lead. With a dominant scrum and lineout, the Hyndland forwards ensured plenty of possession for a backline which looked increasingly threatening with every passing minute. A well-timed run from Andy MacIver saw him ghost through the Moffat defence and touch down without a defender getting near him.

Moffat couldn't live with the speed of the Hyndland attack, and this culminated in the visitors temporarily being reduced to 14 men. Winger Charles Pourieux found himself in space, only for the covering outside centre of Moffat to almost behead the Hyndland player with a shockingly high tackle. It was a shameful attempt at a tackle, with the Moffat man extremely fortunate to escape a red card.

Nevertheless, Hyndland took advantage of the temporary numerical advantage, adding two further scores. First up was recent recruit Rory Jack, battering over from close range. Not long afterwards, the backline took centre stage as a sweeping move out wide saw Conor Nisbet cross the line, helping his team to a halftime lead of 26-7.

Hyndland eased off a little in the second period, however still managed to add two further scores. As the play approached the Moffat line, Jeff Dobson spotted a gap at the side of the ruck and caught the Moffat defence out by diving over for the score.

Winger Sean Bull then got his name on the scoresheet after gathering a cross field kick and evading the covering defence to touch down for his first try in Hyndland colours.

Moffat had the last word as they scored a late consolation try, however this was Hyndland's day as they ran out comfortable winners by a score of 40-12.

The club have endured a difficult start to the season, however will be please to finally get their first win under their belt. The key going forward will be to ensure that numbers remain consistent for the upcoming games before the November break.

It was a great team performance where everyone played their part in the victory; man of the match was once again Steve Murphy who put in another excellent display, this time from the second row.

Next up for the side is the long trip north to take on Lochaber RFC.
