Hyndland welcomed league leaders Isle of Mull RFC to Scotstoun in the latest round of West Division 3 fixtures. With several enforced changes due to injury and other availability issues, Hyndland had to rely on their newfound depth to be able to name a full squad of 22.
Despite the alterations to the starting XV, Hyndland picked up from where they had left off the week before, with a fast start out the blocks. Mull did not travel with a fully-trained front-row, nor did their pack offer much resistance in the lineout. This led to the Hyndland forwards building a strong platform for the home side to enjoy plenty of possession.
Mull had no answer for the Hyndland backline’s expansive play, as they took full advantage of ideal running conditions to stretch the game and open a commanding lead. O’Rourke and McGuinness both recorded hattricks to continue their prolific starts to the season; the battle to become this season’s top try-scorer fast becoming a two-horse race. Both men have MacIver to thank for some excellent work at 12, in an extremely productive display on his first start of the season. MacIver not only had a hand in several of his colleagues’ tries but was a constant thorn in the side of the opposition at the breakdown, consistently winning turnover ball for his team.
In the forward pack, new recruit Steven McLarty shone in a superb, hard-hitting performance as he took the game to the opposition right from the first whistle. His finest moment was superbly assisting one of his side's tries. The no.8 created the opportunity out of nothing as he charged down a Mull kick, recovered the ball and then made the pass off the deck to a supporting runner when caught.
With the result beyond doubt early, Hyndland took the opportunity to ring the changes and introduce some new players into the fold. The inevitable disruption to the side allowed Mull to restore some pride and earn a try-scoring bonus point. Nevertheless, this was Hyndland’s day as they secured another comprehensive victory to continue their encouraging start to the season.
Final Score:
Hyndland RFC 45
Isle of Mull RFC 22
This was not a perfect performance from Hyndland, and they will no doubt need to raise their game for some of the tougher tests which lie ahead. That said, the club endured a difficult season last year and can rightly feel much more optimism for the campaign ahead as they occupy a lofty position in the league table at this early stage.
With a free week next weekend, Hyndland’s attentions now turn to preparations for their away game at Lomond/Helensburgh on 15th October.
