Following last weekend's call-off, Hyndland continued their league campaign with a fixture against Loch Lomond RFC. Although several players still remained unavailable for selection, the team boasted a strong starting 15 and a full set of able replacements.
The game began with Hyndland kicking off with a strong wind behind them. Taking advantage of the elements, the Hyndland began on the front foot with most of the rugby being played in the Loch Lomond half. Too many individual errors meant that the team could not capitalise on their territorial advantage and neither side really put their mark on the game.
It was midway through the half before the scoring was opened by the visitors. With a scrum in the Hyndland half, the Lomond 8 picked and went down the blindside. The home defensive failed to halt the move as the ball made it wide for the try to be scored in the corner. A missed conversion left the game finely balanced at 0-5.
Hyndland weren't without their chances in the first half but couldn't turn any of their pressure into points. One of their more promising passages of play began with flanker Robinson turning over possession for his side around halfway by clearing out a Lomond ruck. Malik reacted quickest by scooping up the ball and breaking down the wing. Caught by the covering defence, he found Stubbs with a pass on the inside who then fed Ward inside the opposition 22. Unfortunately Ward could not finish the move as he was bundled into touch - his last significant contribution before being withdrawn due to injury.
The second half continued as the first had played out. Too many individual errors saw Hyndland fail to a maintain a regular supply of possession. Their frustration was compounded by a couple of promising moves being halted by the referee's whistle as both sides faced a strict interpretation of the rules.
Lomond took advantage of a penalty awarded in front of the posts to stretch their lead to 8 points and added a late breakaway try in the final moments to apply some gloss the scoreline in what was a very scrappy but evenly-fought game throughout.
Final Score:
Hyndland RFC 0
Loch Lomond RFC 15
It is back to the drawing board for Hyndland after a disappointing defeat in their first home game of the season. It was a match in which the team never really played to their potential and ultimately will be looked back upon as a missed opportunity to get their first win of the season.
One bright spot from the day was the debut of towering winger Jack Madigan who had a good outing on his first appearance in Hyndland colours. He could have been set away for a try in the first half had the pass that reached him not been (harshly) adjudged to be forward. He did get a chance to stretch his legs with a break down the wing in the second half but was hauled into touch by the covering defence in the opposition 22 before he could reach the try line.
After a disappointing day at the office, the whole squad will be keen to make amends next weekend as they host Cowal RFC in their next league fixture.
