Hyndland's latest outing saw them welcome Cowal RFC to Scotstoun. Having had a couple of false starts in their opening matches against Cumbernauld and Loch Lomond, Hyndland were determined to kick-start their season with a victory. With a full squad of 22, the home side were well-equipped to get their first win of the campaign. Conversely, Cowal travelled with just 16 and without adequate front-row cover, meaning that the scrums were uncontested from the beginning of the match.
Intent on coming out of the blocks fast, Hyndland started the stronger of the two sides with the opening exchanges playing out in the Hyndland half. Smith got his team on the board with a penalty in the middle of the pitch to capitalise on his team's early territorial advantage. It wasn't long after this that the team extended their lead with the game's first try. Filling in at prop for the injured Nay, coach Brown received the ball on the opposition 22 metre line and the Cowal defence could not stop him on his way to crossing the line in the corner. Smith made light work of the conversion from the touchline for a 10-0 lead.
The two sides exchanged further penalties before Cowal scored an unconverted try to reduce the deficit to just 5 points. This was as close as the scores would be for the rest of the game as Hyndland found another gear before half time to add a further two tries. The first came from Hyndland sucking in the home defence tight before spinning the ball out wide for centre Wemyss to outpace the covering defence and score the try. The next score came in similar circumstances as the ball was quickly played out wide. This time the covering defence made the tackle just before the try could be scored, however hooker Rodger was quickest to react by grabbing the ball from the base of the ruck and diving over for the score.
Halftime Score:
Hyndland RFC: 25
Cowal RFC: 8
Following the respite of halftime, Cowal emerged rejuvenated and caught the home side sleeping to score an early try. Hyndland regathered their composure to go up the other end and score their bonus point try. Smith took the ball blind and drew in the Cowal defenders before releasing winger Madigan who finished off the move, touching down near the posts. Hyndland again were guilty of not putting their opposition away as they allowed Cowal to score another converted try to bring the deficit back to 10 points. The result was never in doubt though as Hyndland pressed hard to extend their lead again. Brown had final say as he caught the Cowal defence unawares with a quickly taken tap penalty for his second try of the afternoon. Smith completed a fine afternoon with the boot by once again slotting a difficult conversion from out wide.
Final Score:
Hyndland RFC: 39
Cowal RFC: 22
The team can take great pride from a well-earned victory against a Cowal side that defied their numbers by providing stern opposition for much of the match. The Hyndland squad worked together from start to finish to produce their best performance of the season so far, scoring the points that their superiority deserved. The squad still have plenty to work on, however the side will savour this win before moving on to next week's fixture away to Loch Lomond RFC in the Bowl.
