Following the disappointment of defeat in their last outing, Hyndland didn't have to wait long for a chance at revenge with their return match against Moffat taking place just two weeks later. Despite the team missing several players through injury and other commitments, the club were in the fortunate position of being able to name a full squad of 22 for the trip to the Borders.
After a close-fought match at Scotstoun a fortnight earlier, the game began in similar circumstances with the two sides exchanging early blows. Hyndland pressure in the opposition 22 was rewarded with a try from James Brown as he drove for the line from close range. Moffat struck back with a penalty before taking the lead with a try of their own.
Despite falling behind, Hyndland were playing well, their superiority in the forwards securing regular ball for a back-line eager to attack. Campbell Grant, a thorn in the side of Moffat two weeks ago, was terrorising the home defence again with his incisive running. On one of his many marauding runs, he broke through the Moffat defence to score his 3rd try in 2 games.
Next to get in on the act was no.8 Nicky Gillan. The back rower received the ball just inside the opposition half and found Brown in space out wide with a delightful looping pass. Brown was caught just short of the line, but was able to offload the ball back to Gillan who finished off the move with a try.
Moffat kept themselves in the match with another try and penalty and as the second half wore on, Hyndland led by just a point. The home side enjoyed significant possession inside the Hyndland 22 metre line, but resolute defence kept Moffat at bay and prevented them from adding to their tally.
After weathering a storm, Hyndland managed to relieve the pressure and managed to get the play back into the Moffat half. Crumbling under pressure, Moffat conceded a penalty on their own five metre line. A quick tap and pass to Cowie left the forward with the task of bursting through a couple of would-be tacklers to touch down for Hyndland's 4th score, providing his side with some much needed breathing space.
With the game finely balanced at 24-18, Moffat had the chance to narrow the gap with a penalty, however they failed to convert. From that point on, Hyndland's lead never really felt in danger as the team pressed to extend their advantage. They made hard work of it, but finally managed to force their way over for a try from Brown to see cap off a period of sustained pressure on the Moffat defence and see out the game out in style.
Final Score:
Moffat RFC 18
Hyndland RFC 29
This was a match won by a terrific team performance where everyone stepped up and delivered what was asked of them. The side showed grit and determination to see out the game when they put under a lot of pressure at the beginning of the second half. Where the team failed two weeks earlier, they showed a lot more resilience and fortitude this week to grind out the result.
While the whole team deserve credit, special mentions should go to Beeston, Maddison, Ward and Stubbs who set the tone in the forwards with a tenacious and hard-hitting display in defence. In the backs, Grant at centre was a real dangerman in attack, wreaking havoc as the home defence could not withstand his pace and strength with the ball in hand.
Hyndland will be looking to build on this result with another strong outing next weekend at home to Cumbernauld.
