The final week of Ilkley Town's pre season preparations saw lots of minutes for all the players who will be involved in the squad this season.
The first team started the week off with what can only be described as a typical 0-0 draw at home to Humberside Premier Division opponents, South Cave United. Chances for both sides were very limited throughout, with the visitors having the better of them. Goalkeeper James Hirst taking the man of the match award for Ilkley.
A Wednesday night trip away at Salts FC was up next. This time for both the first team and the second team. Ilkley Town took across two very strong squads, showing the strength in depth the club has this season. The second team drew 3-3, in a game where they had a lot of possession. The goals coming from Alex Macpherson, Adam Davey and Jack Murray. Another goalkeeper took the man of the match for Ilkley as young Charlie Gregory claimed the award for some fine saves. The first team managed a 4-2 victory. The game was tightly contested in the early stages of the game. However, Ilkley found themselves having to come back from 2-1 down to seal the win, with the help of an own goal from Salts. Dave Hancock scoring a wonder strike from 30 yards to bring the game back on to level terms. Two further goals followed with a well taken goal by man of the match Dec Bradley and a tap in for Danny Henderson after a goalkeeping error for Salts.
Steeton were the opponents to visit Ilkley for the final games of pre season. Again, both the first team and second team played matches against the West Riding County Amateur club. The second team winning emphatically 4-1 with two goals from Connor Greenwood and a goal a piece for Adam Davey and Will Giles. Davey also taking the man of the match award. The first team were beaten by a powerful Steeton team 3-2. However, Ilkley were well on top in the first half of the game and could've easily been out of touch by half time. Iain Blackburn causing huge problems for the Steeton defence. A pass from Matt Tollefson put Blackburn through towards goal with the Town forward beating two defenders before been brought down in the penalty area. Blackburn putting a way the spot kick to put Ilkley 1-0 up. Moments later and Blackburn was at it again with a marvellous effort from outside the box. Chipping the ball over the on rushing Steeton goalkeeper only to hit the bar. An equaliser for the visitors soon followed with Steeton taking the lead soon after half time. A third goal for the West Riding Amateur club was scored with 15 minutes to play. In the closing stages Ilkley managed to get a second goal with Jack Murray providing a fantastic cross to the back post for Dan Chadwick to steer home with a volley. Despite the defeat, there was plenty to take from the game with the biggest positive been Aidan Mower, who played his best game yet in an Ilkley shirt and picked up the man of the match award.
