End of Season Round-Up - 2021/22

Tom Clark23 May 2022 - 14:12

IGS secure place in Division One next season on final day

IGS concluded their 5th season as a football club with a 3-1 win against Leybourne, which ensured their survival in Division One.

Whilst the season finished on a high, the campaign as a whole have been full of up's and down's.

Pre-season started in August 2021 and whilst results didn't always go our way with only one win from five friendlies, the team performances were good and a number of new players got valuable minutes in the tank.

Our season opened with a home match against newly-formed Yalding & Laddingford and the Stars got off to the best possible start with a 2-1 win. A 0-5 hammering against East Malling followed in a game which saw captain Eddy Davis taken from the field injured - he wouldn't play again until April. September finished with a huge 15-1 win against an under-strength Sutton Valence side - this is IGS' record win in all competitions - and Sam Tate bagged 4 goals in the game. Tate would finish the season as top scorer on 12 goals - a personal best for him.

The month of October only saw two fixtures as the weather and postponements took their toll, but a fine 5-4 win against Yalding & Laddingford again was a high point. Into November and only one win again, as The Stars turned over Parkwood Jupitors in the cup 6-0 - Alex March hitting a hat-trick in this one.

As 2021 ended, 2022 brought new hope and new players into the club. Striker Steve Gosling scored on debut in a 3-2 win at home to Leybourne City in the cup and IGS followed that win up with a penalties victory over Yalding & Laddingford again; Jamie Davis, Liam Wilkins and Pat Cunningham scoring in the shootout. Crucially, Ian Black saved 3 out of 4 Yalding kicks in this game!

Unfortunately penalty luck wasn't with The Stars after a 3-3 semi-final draw with Aylesford as we missed out on a place in the Presidents Cup final in the cruelest of ways.

March was a busy month of fixtures as the season began to wrap up. A vital 6-5 win against Barming Blues at home; two goals a piece by Eddy Davis, Liam Wilkins and Callum Ward; was followed by a heavy cup semi final defeat to East Malling. IGS's cup runs both came to an end at the semi-final stage.

April and May between them only heralded one win, which was the final day crunch match vs Leybourne, which ultimately secured IGS' place in Division One next season. Captain Eddy Davis bagged a brace of penalties in this game, with another from new signing Leon Mitchell, who finished the season with 2 goals in 3 games.

All in all, a very mixed season. Two fantastic cup runs brought a much needed break from league struggles, but the club will need to find a better level of consistency next season if we are to push to a higher position in the league.
