Island Marine 1st team crowned Premier League Champions 2019/20

Island Marine FC1 Jul 2020 - 15:29

With the league being cut short due to Covid 19, this years VOG senior leagues were decided on a points per game basis.

Even though its not the way any club wants to win a league, the boys had been fantastic during the season and put themselves in a great position had the season been completed.

The opening day in August saw the boys travel to Cowbridge and put in an impressive display to leave the Bear Field with 3 points. Goals from Craig Gilbert, Rhyd Hopkins, Adam Owens (2), Sam Dyer and Rhys Hopkins secured a 6-0 win and a great start to the campaign.

September started well with a tough mid week, 1-0 away win against Cogan thanks to a Rhys Hopkins free kick. The first home game at Maslin saw the Marine put in another impressive display to beat St Athan 4-0 with a hat trick from Adam Owens and a goal from Tom Baker.

It wasn't until mid September than the boys finally conceded a goal in a 4-1 away win at Cardiff Airport, goals from Adam Owens, Charlie Byrne (2) and a debut goal for Keir McInery saw the Marine take all three points to keep their impressive start going.

The first defeat of the season occurred at the end of September with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Penarth Town, Josh Manning with the Marine goal. The bad run continued at the start of October with another disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Cadoxton Imps.

The boys didn't play another league until the start of January but they got back to winning ways with a 3-1 home win against Cowbridge. Debutant Joe Mellars bagged 2 goals and Dan Belly secured the much needed win to get the Marine's title hopes back on track.

A tough 2-0 away win at Penarth with goals from Adam Bowsher and Joe Mellars wiped away the defeat back in Sept.

The performance of the season was in mid January against high flying Holton Road when the boys played some fantastic football in a 5-1 home win. Goals from Joe Mellars (2), Adam Owens, Rhyd Hopkins and Danny Bell saw the lads really put them in the running for the title.

The final game of the league season was a 4-1 away win against local rivals Barry Athletic. Another tough game in difficult conditions saw Joe Mellars again grab a brace with Rhyd Hopkins and Jake Rogers completing the scoring.

The lads also had a good run in the South Wales Senior Cup being the last representative from Barry still in the competition. The run started in Nov with a good 4-1 home win against Taff Ely side Church Village. Goals from Adam Owens (2), Rhys Hopkins and Keir Mcinery set up a third round tie against Senior league opponents Llantwit Fadre.

The lads travelled to Pontypridd on the 7 Dec and put in an impressive display against higher league opponents. 2 goals from Joe Mellars, a first goal for the seniors from youth team player Joe Doughty, with Sam Dyer and Keir McInery rounding off a great day for the club.

The final game of the season was a 5th round Senior cup away at old rival Nelson Cavaliers, the winners facing Pentwyn Dynamos in the quarters finals. After a close game the lads were finally beaten 4-2 with goals from Dan Ladner and Joe Doughty not enough to secure the win.

A great season all round and topped off with the first ever senior title win for the club. With ten league games played, 8 wins, over 30 goals scored, only 8 goals conceded including 5 clean sheets, the boys did really deserve the title. A big thanks to all the players and to coaches Kevin Owens and Pat Curran for all their hard work during this very unusual season.
