Kidsgrove Athletic suffered their first league defeat of the season after being beat 5-0 by table toppers Macclesfield at the Leasing.com Stadium.
The away side began the game the better of the two sides and had chances to break the deadlock, but a wonder strike by James Berry saw the Grove go into the break behind.
This opener seemed to spark Macclesfield into life and further strikes by Joe Bunney, Neil Kengini, Tom Clare and Neil Danns sealed all three points for the hosts.
The Grove did start the game really positively and could have been ahead after just three minutes when Jordan Cole was found free in the area from a free kick, but he could only guide the ball into the arms of goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga.
Cole was involved in another visitors opening four minutes later, but his fired effort from range was caught by Pitaluga, before Kyle Diskin narrowly evaded the left hand corner from a low free-kick only moments later, as Scott Dundas’ outfit really were piling on the early pressure.
On 18 minutes, Pitaluga was forced into another save as he got down well to hold Oliver Jepson’s header after he rose highest from a corner.
Then just after the half hour mark, Kidsgrove had their best chance of the game and really should have been ahead when on the counter-attack, Diskin fed Cole in the box but his low drive was tipped behind by Pitaluga.
However, totally against the run of play, the hosts went ahead when James Berry smashed the ball into the top corner after going on an individual run from midfield.
Three minutes after the break, Macclesfield doubled their tally when from a free kick Joe Bunney saw his header loop over Ryan Brown and into the back of the net.
Then nine minutes later the game was put out of Kidsgrove’s reach when Neil Kengini was played in down the left and he fired the ball into the roof of the net.
With confidence high for the hosts, they added a fourth on 63 minutes when a low cross from the right was met by Clare who slotted the ball home.
Three minutes later, the Silkmen would have added a fifth if it wasn’t for an excellent stop by Brown who somehow managed to get a vital touch to Kengini’s low drive that looked destined for the corner.
Dundas’s side nearly grabbed a consolation goal in spectacular fashion, but Harry Derbyshire’s shot from distance bounced just wide of the right hand post.
However, the victory was rounded up with four minutes to go when a Nicky Maynard low cross found Danns at the back post who converted the ball home to see all three points go to the Silkmen.
Kidsgrove will be looking to bounce back on Saturday as they play host to Within Albion.
