There was one overriding achievement to achieve in this game and that was acomplished - get the fixture fulfilled. We also have the hex on every Kill season that no matter how good we go in a season we are always due one hiding which normally proceeds the Punchestown festivities.
The catalogue and fixture pile up had surely taken their toll at this stage and Kill were left to field a team that only had 3 people in their correct positions and 4 players that had signed at the start of the year but hadn't played at all this season. A massive thanks to those lads who stepped in and helped us get the game played and fulfilled. Esker to be fair were missing a few of there squad but not as many as Kill who were down 9 regulars. It sounds like excuses from the off, but we were just a battered and flattened team at this stage of the season and even our seasoned established lads who did play this game looked jaded and were already thinking of our after season party.
Esker had more at stake and certainly played for a bit of pride and redemption and even though they were missing a few it was only a handful of players compared to Kill's absentee list, they were strong all around the park and wanted it more and dominated this game from start to finish,. Kill did not want to be on the pitch and that transcended hugely into the play but to be fair in hindsight they done well to keep the score to just 6.
Esker burst into a 3 nil lead on 20 minutes and Kill had to try and stop the flow as Esker were causing all sorts of havoc with tough tackling and some excellent flowing play the first coming from the full back when he jinked his way through and finished under Kilkelly before a second was added from a wonderful strike into the top corner. The third followed when a great through ball fed in the striker who neatly dinked over Kilkelly and then before the break a fourth was added.
I had to come on for the last hour and was only intending on playing the last 10 minutes and felt the force of a number of Esker challenges who seem to employ a good physical nature to their play that takes no messing. I could see now at full hand how the lads just didn't want to be there but credit to Esker they were far superior to us today and our only job in the second half was to limit the goal count. The fifth came amongst a tired stray back pass and the sixth was a clumsy penalty which kind of summed up our evening and in fairness Ray Davis was one of the only players along with Gary Keely who really showed great spirit and energy in standing up to the Lucan side. I did manage to have a shot on goal myself but Blaine Bourke saved well although I must of looked like a leg handcuffed giraffe the way I swung at it.
Pity in a way for the few players who hung up the boots today to go out on such a note however a true reflection of this season can draw the appropriate solace - 32 games 3 draws 2 defeats and 27 wins. We would be doing extraordinary to match that statistic again in any season. Also as mentioned before and it deserves it again until Ratoath stopped us in our tracks we recorded 30 league games on the road over three seasons without defeat and also a remarkable home record of 17 wins out of 17 - Fortress Straffan Road.
On to the awards night when we can look back on it all and truly raise a glass and say We are Double Winners as the Red N Black Class of Twenty Fifteen bows out on a truly great achievement.
Well done to Esker Celtic on their win and we look forward to locking horns with you again in Division 2 next season.
