REPORT:
A crazy derby Cup game saw both teams put it all on the line in a fantastic encounter in Ballymount Park. From the tip off we raced out of the blocks not letting them settle & forcing them into mistakes which saw their centre mid score a cracking OG from a wayword back pass ? We pushed onwards grabbing two more goals from 2 excellent pin point assists from Ben Finnegan as in form Striker Liam Delaney powered home his chances. It was one way traffic for the first 43 minutes or so, Cian Jones could have made it 4 when put through but his effort was tipped over the bar by Belgard's Goalkeeper Ken Bruce who had an eventful day to say the least. With only a few minutes left before the half time break a long range shot squeezed into our net then only a minute later a free header at the back post had the visitors right back into this contest. Rather than going in 3/4-0 up we had to get our heads around the 3-2 scoreline.
We expected Belgard to come at us hard in the second half & that's what happened as they put our backline under a lot of pressure, we didn't help ourselves at all giving away silly free kicks that led to them drawing level then taking the lead with half an hour left!! We looked to our bench with Manager Robbie Gaynor calling upon Alex Murray & Lar Mc Cormack to get a grip of our midfield, both stepped up creating a number of opportunities for Delaney who broke free shooting low with Goalkeeper Bruce getting just enough on it to scramble back to keep it out. Another Striker was added with Conor Murray thrown into the frame he went looking to in behind their backline which he did on a number of occasions.
Our Squad refused to give up as we continued to push forward & get our just rewards which came in the last minute of the 90 when Alex Murray slid in Matthew Raymond he took a touch setting before finishing a low drive into the bottom corner of the net to make it 4-4....
Ten minutes each way of extra time came & went quickly with both teams blowing hard asking question's of their fitness levels, neither side could find the winner but we had our Goalkeeper Cian Byrne to thank as he pulled off a wonderful one handed save when their Striker looked certain to score as he placed his shot top corner that was right at the end of the game this save turned out to be the last attack of the game that lead too penalties.
The lottery of penalties saw us come out the wrong end as we missed two with Goalkeeper Cian Byrne giving us a life line saving one of theirs but it wasn't enough as Belgard came out victors 3-4. Credit to all in what was an example of how the game should be played especially a local Derby.
We thank Belgard Athletic FC & look forward to our League fixtures later on in the season #thecastle⚫⚪⚽
