Dolly Blues shore up defence with familiar face.

Lancaster City are delighted to announce the signing of Jack Byrne following a successful trial period.

Byrne, 22, began his career at AFC Fylde’s academy and signed his first professional deal with the Coasters in 2020.

He had loan spells at Barnoldswick Town and Kendal Town before joining Lancaster City in March 2022 on a loan until the end of that season, scoring two goals and helping his team keep four clean sheets in that time, before returning to Mill Farm after his deal ended.

He extended his contract at Fylde and spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Northern Premier League Division One West side Widnes, before moving there on a free transfer last summer.

He has returned to The Giant Axe on a permanent basis after appearing in all four pre-season games so far and has impressed on the left side of defence.

Byrne becomes Chris Willcock’s fourth summer signing and joins Marcus Cusani, Chris Dagnall and Dylan Moonan as new additions to the Dolly Blues’ squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Jack Byrne told LCFC Media: “I’m buzzing to be back!

“Sam (Bailey) put my name forward and when I got the call from the gaffer I was just absolutely buzzing.

“Knowing some of the lads has definitely made it easier to get into the team.

“I want to help take the team as high as we can and try and get into the playoffs and push on.

“It was close last year and I feel like with the lads we’ve got here, we’ve got a good chance.”

Chris Willcock said: “Jack has had a good 60 or so games at Step 4 and we feel he’s now ready for Step 3.

“He will come in and bring some good qualities, he’s desperate to learn which is good from a manager’s point of view.”
