After a slow start to the season, with poor results against Bosham & Worthing Town, we headed into the bank holiday weekend knowing we had to kick start our season.
A bank holiday weekend always presents clubs at our level problems, especially with kit, player availability and most of your weekend taken up. However, it also presents the opportunity to get some quick fire points on the board with 2 games in the space of 3 days.
On Saturday, we welcomed Clymping FC to Croshaw. Last season, we had 3 (2 league, 1 cup) good battles against them, & we knew this game would be the same. Clymping had some good pre season results & only narrowly lost to Sidlesham and Jarvis Brook 2-1.
We ran out 4-1 winners on the day, thanks to goals from Neil Munday, Grant Thetford (2) and Dan Measom. The score line doesn't tell the whole story though as for large parts of the game it was a fairly even contest.
MOM was a close one between Neil and Grant, but I think the latter just shaded it with 2 fantastic finishes & at key times during the game either side of half time.
Result of the day has to be Alfold winning 3-2 against last seasons champions Bosham FC. Alfold have started the season very well & will be up there come the end of the season.
Monday-
We welcomed Montpelier Villa to Croshaw, for an early bank holiday KO.
Like Clymping, we knew MVFC were going to be a decent outfit after picking up some excellent pre season results. They started the season with a 2-0 win over Rottingdean Village who are pointless, but then lost Saturday to Westfield 2-0.
A single goal from captain Sam Page, midway through the first half secured another valuable 3 points. For large parts MVFC had a lot of possession but never really tested Steve in goal. In truth, the game was very lethargic due to the heat and a game on the Saturday beforehand.
I must say though, Simon & his players are a friendly bunch who will make many friends this season. I'm confident they will finish higher than what they did last season.
MOM goes to Scott Vine. Since we signed him in the summer from Neighbours Sompting FC, he's been tremendous. Loves a battle & works his socks off for the team. Unfortunately, we lose him midway through September when he leaves for Australia.
Result of the day goes to my old team and near neighbours Upper Beeding. Fantastic result against free scoring and my favourites for the title Roffey FC. Good to see them doing well (until we meet). They were presented with a real tough opening few games, but have held their own & have picked up a good return of points.
This Saturday, we face one of the toughest away trips of the season with a long journey to Jarvis Brook. They sit nicely at the top of the table, albeit early days, with 3 wins out of 3. We have a good record against them, being the only club to beat them last season, in fact, we did it twice.
Should be a cracker.
