Four Edinburgh players bring the Blitz to Milntown

Last Wednesday night Langholm Youth Rugby were host to a number of Edinburgh Rugby players who came down to Milntown as part of the latest Edinburgh Rugby Blitz. The Blitz is where any players not going to be involved in the match day squad at the weekend are sent out to any clubs wishing to take part and four players made the journey down the A7 on Wednesday, backs Chris Leck and Bruce Dick and forwards Ewan McQuillan and Rob McAlpine. There were 31 youngsters there from our U14 and U16 squads and they enjoyed a great training session with the Edinburgh players. We split into four squads with a Langholm coach and Edinburgh player working with each group and they started with an Edinburgh warm up before moving into backs and forwards and working on some drills.
Ewan McQuillan worked with the U14 forwards and gave them some really good coaching on setting a scrum before doing some ruck work. Rob McAlpine worked with U16's along with coach Cammy Little and they worked on some very good ruck presentation and running in support.
Bruce Dick and Chris Leck, who was really excellent with the youngsters and was so infectious with his enthusiasm and had the boys really enjoying the session, worked with U14's coach Russell Bell to deliver a session of attacking drills and show the boys some interesting new lines to run into space.
The Langholm coaches agreed afterwards that not only the boys but also the coaches had learnt a lot from the evening and it had given them some fresh ideas and new stuff to work on at training.
The Blitz was organised by Langholm Development Officer Iain Park and he said afterwards he was really pleased with the way it had gone. "It was good to see as many boys present and they had worked well during the session and seemed to have taken a lot from the evening. He said he felt it was a good opportunity for our coaches to work with the Pro players and it gave them some fresh ideas so we could keep training interesting for the players".
Afterwards there was a Q & A session where some interesting questions asked which were all well answered and then the players signed autographs and all the boys received a squad photo and Edinburgh flag.
