In what turned out to be a dramatic and very exciting match , Langholm pulled off one the greatest comeback seen at Milntown for many years. Their opponents Haddington RFC were sitting second in East League 1 and the home side knew that they would be dangerous in attack and solid in defence.
Langholm kicked off and Haddington caught the ball and ran in their first try with only 50 seconds on the clock . The quiet Milntown crowd could only watch as the conversion was made and Haddington were 7-0 in the lead . Langholm tried to get back into the match but some good running by the visitors combined with some poor tackling from Langholm had the home side struggling to contain these ongoing attacks . After 9 minutes Haddington were on the score sheet once again with an unconverted try.
Langholm won a penalty after 16 minutes but the usually accurate Donaldson pushed it wide . Another penalty for Langholm was also missed before Haddington scored a converted try to make the score 19 -0 to the visitors. Langholm were now struggling to get any ball and when Haddington scored their fourth try the Milntown crowd fell silent.
Half time score Langholm 0 , Haddington 24 .
Coach Craig Hislop obviously had a few choice words for his team during the break , because it was a different Langholm that started the second half.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Jamie Gormley skipped in for a try . Four minutes later and a chip through by Ben Jardine resulted in a try for him which Donaldson converted . The Milntown faithful had now rediscovered their voice and the ground buzzed with excitement.
Another Langholm try only 2 minutes by Ruaidhri Forbes resulted in a massive cheer and with a successful conversion the crowd could sense something was on the cards. The score now 19-24 Haddington were now under real pressure .
With an hour on the clock Steve Nichol expertly handed off the opposition to score a try and with Donaldson on target with the conversion from the touchlinethe score was now 26 -24.
Haddington struck back with an unconverted try to retake the lead which spurred Langholm on. Langholm set up an attack just outside the Haddington 22 . The ball was taken forward and passed to Alasdair Cavers who burst through the opposition to score a great try and the crowd went wild . With Donaldson again on target the score was now 33-29 with 5 minutes to play.
Haddington threw everything they could at Langholm but the home defence stood strong . Final Score Langholm 33 Haddington RFC 29
It was a great win and the teams determination in the second half was tremendous . Everyone of the 22 players in the squad played their heart out and should be congratulated . They pulled off a memorable win . Langholm are now joint second in East League 1
