A late comeback and last minute winner stunned Lawrenny and consigned them to a first defeat of the season as they went out of the Senior Cup at the 1st Round stage again. Lawrenny held a 2-0 lead going in to the final 15 minutes of the match and looked good value for that lead before Kilgetty's late heroics that broke Lawrenny hearts.
Lawrenny went in to the game on the back of 2 excellent performances and welcomed back influential midfielder Tom Cole while Patrick Elliott came in for the university bound Marcus Adie for his first game of the season while Chris Beff was on the bench on his comeback from Prendergast Villa and pre-season injury. Kilgetty started the brightest as they saw the lion share of possession early on and nearly made the early pressure count as Danny Harries was forced into a wonderful save, taking a blow to the head at the same time. Lawrenny started to get a foot in the game and began to ease the pressure on their defence while put some on themselves, Dean Morris could and possible should have scored after the Kilgetty keeper slipped and fumbles a ball only for Dean to do the same thing on the wet pitch just as he was about to slot home. Owen James also had a chance as he brilliantly cut inside but fired wide. As the half wore on Kilgetty started to get back on top but with half an hour gone Lawrenny took the lead against the run of play as Tom Cole found space in the midfield he released Owen James behind his marker and he raced on to the ball and fired home to round a off a good counter attack. Within a couple of minutes they doubled their led this time good build up play from Tom Cole and Dean Morris down the left flank they then switched the ball to Owen James who played inside to Harry Thomas who then laid the ball off to Matt Lewis who fired low in to the bottom corner from 20 yards. These goals seemed to knock Kilgetty back as Lawrenny dominated possession for the remainder of the half without creating anything meaningful.
The second half started as the first half finished with Lawrenny on the front foot and having particular success down the left hand side. Kilgetty grew stronger as the half went on but the chances were all going Lawrenny's way. First a good ball down the line from Tom Lewis freed Owen James who chose to shoot instead of play in Harry Thomas and could only find the side netting. Owen James then had another great chance as Dean Morris picked him out with a great pass and he beat his man well but could only shoot straight at the keeper. Lawrenny would come to pay for these missed opportunities as with just 15 minutes to go as the game seemed to be petering out Kilgetty had a lifeline as a nothing ball floated in to the box wasn't dealt with and Danny Harries was forced in to bringing down the Kilgetty winger as he seemed certain to score and they scored from the resulting penalty. This put the wind in Kilgetty's sails and seemed to dent the confidence of Lawrenny as Kilgetty bombed forward with Lawrenny retreating to try and protect the lead. It looked a matter of time until the equaliser came and yet Lawrenny had one last chance to win the game as a long clearance brought the Kilgetty keeper way outside his area, his miscontrol gave Ryan Morton a chance and he won the ball back and the ball fell to Owen James with a lot to do under pressure but his shot from 35 yards drifted agonizingly wide the keeper stranded in no mans land. The equalizer then came minutes later as a needless free kick given away on the edge of the box was floated to the far post and was duly headed home despite strong calls for offside. Lawrenny looked shellshocked and Kilgetty sensing blood went for the kill and after a goal mouth scramble wasn't dealt with the ball was turned home to give Lawrenny the lead for the first time. Lawrenny looked shellshocked and tried to rally themselves to fine an equalizer of their own but Kilgetty saw them game out comfortably to complete a remarkable turnaround and progress to the next round of the cup. Lawrenny will be most disappointed with how they managed to turn a win against a strong side into a defeat, especially after playing so well for the majority of the game.
