Lawrenny knocked out in 9 goal thriller

Lawrenny are out of the West Wales Cup in the 1st round as they lost a 9 goal thriller against Neath Premier League leaders Bryn Rovers after a pulsating 120 minutes. Ever since the draw was made there has been a building excitement for the team as they got the away trip they craved and wih a good following on the bus and an excellent breakfast supplied by Elaine Lewis they made the long trip to Brynamman. Lawrenny were able to name 5 subs again due to it being a cup match but were forced in to a couple of changes from the heavy defeat to Merlins Bridge as James Durbridge and Adam Jenkins were unavailable so Patrick Elliott and Ed Merriman slotted in at centre back and Owen James returned on the right wing.

A usual slow start from Lawrenny saw them firmly on the back foot for the opening 10 minutes and the quality in possession was evident from their opposition. They dominated the early proceedings but failed to create any clear openings. Lawrenny started to get in to the game but it wasn't until a bad challenge on Patrick Elliott that they really woke up. A Bryn Rovers midfielder over ran the ball in possession and in a desperate attempt to win the ball back he caught Pat's ankle and was very lucky the ref only showed him a yellow card. The boys started to string some passes together and within 5 minutes they took the lead. Patrick Elliott floated a free kick to the far post and Tom Cole rose highest to head home. 5 minutes later and Lawrenny were celebrating again. This time it was Owen James as he curled his low free kick around the wall and in to the bottom corner. The goal seemed to spark Bryn Rovers in to life and they started to push for a response knowing the next goal would be vital and they found it after a mistake in the midfield allowed them space to pick out a delightful through ball to their whippet of a striker to race on to and finish past the onrushing Danny Harries despite the desparing lunge of Patrick Elliott on the line. Lawrenny though almost immediately restored their 2 goal lead as a long ball was flicked on by Joe Kidney and Tom Cole raced clear and finished well for his second of the game. The goals didn't finish there though as Bryn Rovers managed to get level just before half time as firstly after a good move their midfielder was allowed time in the box and after Harries brilliantly saved his first attempt he couldn't recover in time to deny him on the rebound. Then straight after they drew level as again the pace of their striker was too much and he raced clear from midfield to score again.

It was a breathless first half with goals aplenty but Lawrenny had plenty to be proud of as they competed with an excellent side. If the first hald was an exhilerating goalfest the second half couldnt have been any different as both sides worked hard defensively knowing that the next goal may just win it. Both sides had chances as Bryn forced Harries in to a couple of good saves and Lawrenny went close through Elliott and Dean Morris while Cole had a chance to complete his hat-trick. Both sides made changes looking to get a goal but neither could break the deadlock and after 90 minutes the game was tied 3-3 and it went to extra time.

Lawrenny had the worst possible start to extra time though as they conceded twice with 5 minutes and it looked like more likely any further goals would come from Bryn Rovers. However Lawrenny broke on the counter and Owen James was freed down the left hand side and was fouled in the box which saw a peanlty given and the offending player receive his marching orders for a second booking. Tom Cole duly despatched the spot kick to complete his first senior hat-trick and give Lawrenny a sniff in the second period. Bryn though defended resolutely while looking to break on the counter and despite one late chance for Dean Morris who blazed over when better placed to score Lawrenny couldn't find the goal to take it to penalties. It was a fantastic effort from the lads and nobody could deby it was a performance to be proud of despite the narrow loss.
