Bateman Sports Chairmans Challenge Cup Saturday 4th February

Letcombe moved into the last 8 of the Hellenic League Bateman Sports Chairmans Challenge Cup with a 4-3 win on penalties after the game had finished in a 2-2 draw. With both sides unbeaten in their respective leagues, this was always going to be a closely contested match, and so it proved.

After an even first 15 minutes, Newbury had a chance when a free-kick was headed back across goal from the far post, but Terry Patterson shot over the bar. Luke Stone powered a header from a corner for Letcombe, but it was cleared off the line. Calum Pryce raced away on the left for the hosts, but his low cross was cleared. Two well matched sides were giving the large crowd some great entertainment, and Newbury had a chance to take the lead as half time approached, but Luke Polding shot over the bar from a free kick just outside the penalty area. Letcombe scored in the 44th minute when Josh Fowler`s low cross from the left was well controlled by Jordi Davies, who spun and saw his shot go into the net via the far post.

Letcombe had a great chance to increase their lead early in the second half when Fowler was sent clear, but after rounding keeper Ben Morton, he was unable to find the net. Newbury were reduced to ten men when Sam Connor was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Pryce, and they were reduced to nine men for 10 minutes soon afterwards when Jesse Bowers was sent to the sin-bin for dissent. Despite this, Newbury had a great chance to equalise, but Jack Alfonso shot over the bar from 6 yards. Letcombe then made the most of their numerical advantage, Pryce receiving a pass from Davies and scoring from 8 yards. Newbury pulled a goal back when Carl Jenner raced away to score, referee Darren Hill choosing to ignore the raised offside flag, and Newbury were level two minute later, Luke Polding scoring with a great drive from 35 yards which flew low into the corner of the net. Pryce hit the post for Letcombe and keeper Morton came off his line quickly to block two other Letcombe chances. Referee Hill waved away Letcombe appeals for a penalty as Pryce appeared to be brought down in the last minute, and so the match went to penalties. The first three were all missed, two for Newbury and one for Letcombe, but there were no more errors, with Letcombe winning the shoot-out 4-3.

These two sides will meet again in the near future if Newbury win their delayed match in the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftree Trophy.
