Letcombe returned to winning ways after their first defeat of the season against Long Crendon in the challenge cup four days earlier, but it took a second half fight-back after a very poor opening to secure the three points.
Credit is due to the Letcombe groundsman as the pitch was in great condition despite heavy and persistent overnight rain. The hosts were without 4 regular starters, and having won the toss, they decided to kick with the wind in their favour. Their first half performance was by far the worst of the season, and the young Shrivenham side never gave their free scoring opponents any clear chances. They deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes with an excellent dipping shot from Matty Horsell from 25 yards. Letcombe appealed for a penalty shortly afterwards after Redd Pratley was sent tumbling, but the referee waved away their appeals. Horsell almost doubled the visitors lead, but his low shot went inches wide.
Despite playing against the wind, Letcombe were a different side in the second half. Pratley was clear, but shot wide of the far post, before the hosts equalised on the hour. Jordi Davies controlled a throw in with his back to goal, before deftly turning and driving a shot high into the net just inside the far post. Letcombe continued to have most of the play and chances, but visiting keeper Liam Keville twice saved well from Josh Fowler. Davies volleyed narrowly wide from a Fowler cross, but Letcombe took the lead with 15 minutes remaining when a low Fowler cross was turned into the net from close range by Redd Pratley at the far post. Shrivenham almost salvaged a point in the closing minutes, but keeper Harry Whitehead came off his line to block the shot when a goal looked certain. The referee played seven minutes of added time after a number of injuries and substitutions, and Letcombe were relieved to hear the final whistle.
The hosts certainly missed the pace of Calum Pryce, and with important cup matches against Westwood Wanderers and Newbury in the next three weeks, they will hope that he is soon available again.
