Letcombe travelled to Gloucestershire for their first ever meeting with Stonehouse Town, and returned with another Division One scalp to maintain their unbeaten season.
The hosts dominated possession in the opening exchanges, but the visitors scored with their first attack in the sixth minute. A long Jordan Pierce pass sent Josh Fowler racing clear on the left as the Stonehouse defence appealed for an offside flag, and Fowler calmly chipped the ball past the advancing Adam Clark and inside the near post. Letcombe keeper Harry Whitehead did well to turn a low shot onto the post before the visitors had a great chance to increase their lead. Fowler sent a perfect low cross from the left across the six yard box, but Calum Pryce shot wide at the far post. Pryce soon made amends on the half hour as he spun and scored at the back post from another Fowler cross. Stonehouse reduced the arrears when Nick Humphreys scored a firm header from eight yards, the first time that a well organised Letcombe defence had lost their man.
Stonehouse had the majority of possession in the second half, and Whitehead did well to dive and hold a driven cross from the right, and then tipped a fierce shot from Cam Rees over the bar. Letcombe restored their their two goal lead after 70 minutes as a Joe Blackwell pass sent Fowler clear on the left, and he cut in before driving the ball into the far top corner of the net. Back came Stonehouse, and skipper Alex Kibble reduced the deficit with a 35 yard screamer into the far top corner. Fowler hit the post with a 30 yard drive for Letcombe two minutes later, but Stonehouse were now searching for an equaliser. Kibble sent another fierce drive inches over the bar, and Ryan Thwaite headed just over the bar from a corner. Letcombe made the game safe in added time when Pryce beat two men on the by line before cutting in and rolling the ball across the face of the goal where Owen Shaw scored from close range.
A very pleasing performance by Letcombe, particularly in defence. For only the second time this season, Letcombe had a minority of possession, but the defensive shape was excellent and they only allowed the hosts one clear opening which resulted in their first goal. Keeper Whitehead handled superbly, made two brave saves, and had no chance with the second Stonehouse goal which was unstoppable. Letcombe always looked dangerous on the break with Pryce causing the home defence problems with his pace and skill, whilst it was pleasing to see Fowler back to his best and scoring two more goals after his recent absence through injury.
A final word for our hosts Stonehouse Town who made us very welcome on our first visit. Thank you.
