The match was played in very heavy rain on a pitch that was only just playable and cut up badly. Letcombe scored in the fourth minute when a cross from Josh Fowler eluded home keeper Kevin Butcher and hit the crossbar, James Wright tapping the rebound home from close range. Letcombe created more chances, but then gave away three goals in the space of fifteen minutes. A long ball was not cleared, allowing Michael Porter to race through the middle and equalise, and Chris Allen gave Aldermaston the lead folowing another missed clearance. Lucquan Small increased the lead soon afterwards with a fierce shot from 20 yards, which keeper Danny Joyce got a hand to but could not prevent from entering the net.
Top scorer Fowler had to be replaced by Callum Stockley-Phillips at half time because of an ankle injury, but the second half saw a completely different Letcombe team. Luke Polding reduced the deficit early in the half, running onto a through ball from Joyce following an Aldermaston corner and rounding the keeper before scoring from a narrow angle. Captain Sam Mulvey was outstanding in midfield for Letcombe, and he was unlucky when a back post header from a free kick came back off the upright.
Aldermaston added a fourth and appeared to have made the game safe, but Letcombe would not be denied. Polding again reduced the arrears with a low shot from 15 yards, and home keeper Kevin Buicher made two saves from point blank range to prevent an equaliser.
Letcombe will reflect on a spirited second half performance, but a frustratingly poor first 45 minutes left them with a mountain to climb, but they almost reached the summit. Letcombe return to league action in the next two weeks, entertaining Fairford reserves on Saturday 13th before they make the short journey to Faringdon on 20th.
