With top scorer Josh Fowler and both centre backs missing, Letcombe were forced to shuffle their line-up, with Jordan Smith moving from his usual right back position to partner young Aidan Ormrod at the heart of the defence.
Faringdon started strongly, and former Letcombe player Andy Goodchild had two chances in the first ten minutes, but both were well saved by keeper Danny Joyce. Letcombe grew in confidence, and Chris Rivers was unlucky to see a header from a free kick come back off the far post. Kias Bonner-Shea had two great chances to give Letcombe the lead with only home keeper Connor Guinness-Smith to beat as half time approached. On the first occasion his attempted chip was saved by the keeper, and the second chance went over the bar.
At the other end, Joyce turned a low shot from Goodchild round the post before Letcombe finally got the goal they had been threatening. New signing Chad Abrams picked the ball up from Joyce and broke through the midfield, evading multiple tackles, and calmly placed the ball past the advancing keeper.
Letcombe should have made the game safe early in the second half, but Boyan Thorpe shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy after good work from Abrams. A shot deflected off a defender and crashed against the bar as Letcombe continued to push forward, but Faringdon captain Josh Forth headed narrowly over the bar from a free kick. An even last twenty minutes saw Faringdon push forward in search of an equaliser, but the well organised Letcombe defence remained solid to secure another three valuable points.
This was very much a team effort, but mention must be made of Smith, who more than matched the Faringdon forwards whilst playing out of position, and formed a formidable back four alongside Ormrod, with Christy Whelehan and Luke Mulvey as full backs. Sam Mulvey and Rivers worked tirelessly in midfield, and James Wright who held the ball superbly in attack, well supported by Bonner-Shea. Thorpe and Abrams always looking dangerous when they attacked from wide positions.
Letcombe visit Highworth reserves on Thursday 28th in the Supplementary Cup, and the majority of the squad will be off to the races as there will be no game on Saturday 30th.
