LINBY DIG IN TO SECURE A HARD FOUGHT AWAY WIN
Saturday 7th September 2024.. Central Midlands ,Premier Div.South.
Holbrook St Michaels 1 Linby Colliery 2
Linbys visit to the vastly improved Holbrook Saint Michaels , ended in an hard fought victory for
Jonathan Wass’ young team. Holbrook have recruited well during the summer , experienced
player Manager Marc Strezyzeski and a lot of new additions coming into the club, so it was going
to be a stern test for Linby, and so it proved .
Linby goalkeeper Jack Walker was forced into two good saves in the first 20 minutes , denying
the vastly experienced striker Richard Hanslow , and the impressive Kaylon Cole .
But it was Linby who took the lead on 26 minutes, a neat build saw Ewan Gibsons powerful low
cross , unfortunately turned into his own goal by Strezyzeski, 1-0.
That’s how it stayed, until the break, in a cagey opening half .
Half Time . Holbrook st Michaels 0 Linby Colliery 1.
The home team started the second half very much on the front foot, again Walker produced a
breathtaking save to deny Hanslow on 48 minutes.
Holbrook found an equaliser on 58 minutes, again Walker pulled off a brilliant save , the ball
flew to the edge of the area where Josh Gregory hit a stunning over head kick to beat Walker into
the opposite top corner , 1-1. It was going to have something spectacular to beat the Linby
keeper , and it certainly was !
Holbrook were unlucky on 74 minutes , with Strezyzeskis header hitting the post from a free
kick.
If the home teams equaliser was good, Linbys winning goal was a peach !.. On 77 minutes ,after
a switch of formation and a rash of substitutes , they produced a classic counter attack ,
Gibsons pass found Jack Smith who flicked onto Ashdon Bernard , who turned and fired into the
top corner , past keeper Dan Hartshorn from fully 25 yards out . 2-1.
81Minutes, Hartshorn denied Linby a third saving from Smith in a one on one situation .
There was still time for another stunning save from Walker , to deny Sam Smithson on 87
minutes as the home team , came searching for a second equaliser .
