The Whites began the new campaign with a win over a defensively resolute Wisbech Town thanks to a beauty of a freekick from Leo Priestley.

The new management team got off to the perfect start with 3 points away from home.

The Whites got off to a good start with high pressure and good work in the midfield causing real problems for the opposition back line.

Scott Matthews, Teddy Gibbons and Adam Barthram all found themselves in good crossing positions early on but nothing clear cut came from it.

Two big chances fell to the dangerous Jack McMenemy, the first a tame header from six yards and the second dragged just past the far post.

It was then Scott Matthews turn to come close twice. His header flew just over the bar and his curling effort from just outside the box whistled past the top corner for a goal kick.

The whites maintained the pressure and dominated lots of the ball, with Barthram in particular putting a number of dangerous crosses into the area.

Paul Grimes combined well with McMenemy but despite a few neat touches from the forward, nothing opened up for Lincoln United and somehow the score was level as we reached the break.

The second half continued in a similar manner with Leo Priestley and Elliot Dye dominating the middle of the park, allowing the Whites to create chance after chance but with the breakthrough evading us.

We thought the breakthrough came on the hour mark as the ball was bundled over the line but the referee brought it back for a foul on the Wisbech ‘keeper.

The goal came on the 66th minute and it was well worth the wait. McMenemy was brought down 25 yards from goal and from the free kick, Leo Priestley curled a beauty over the wall and into the top corner.

The pressure from Lincoln United remained with two chances almost falling to the hard-working captain Elliot Dye.

In all, it was a strong performance and a great start to the Scott Hellewell era at Lincoln United. To start the season with three points was always the aim and he will be looking to back it up with another win as we host Newark Town.

It will be a tough test as we play the fellow Lincolnshire side, but we hope to see you there.
