Euro 2012 at Portway Junior School!!!

Cathy Devereux17 May 2012 - 10:36

LITC and Portway Junior finally got the first of their Euro 2012 tournament series underway for the 3rd time of asking thanks to some better weather!

Lions coaches Jamie Dockree, Lewis Alderman and Ben Cooper teamed up with Portway's head teacher Tim Deery to put on an afternoon of tournament football on Thursday 17th May.

Over 70 year 5 boys and girls turned out for an afternoon of football whereby the players were split into 10 international teams (5 boys and 5 girls teams) that were named after 10 of the teams that will contest Euro 2012 this summer. The boys pool consisted of Germany, Spain, France, Czech Republic and Denmark. The girls pool consisted of Netherlands, Ukraine, Portugal, Greece and Russia. A round robin format allowed plenty of game time for all the players involved and the quality of football played throughout was impressive with some terrific goals and excellent goalkeeping on display.

With 4 wins out of 4, Spain triumphed in the boys competition and an equally impressive 100% winning record for Portugal in the girls pool was enough for them to come away victorious. After some deliberation France were awarded the fair play award after displaying great team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the afternoon, which was something displayed by all teams involved.

Special thanks go to the year 6 pupils who took on the role of team managers for the afternoon and displayed excellent leadership skills throughout and also a big thank you to the 4 winton young leaders who refereed the matches throughout the afternoon.

Lions in the community look forward to returning to Portway in the coming weeks to complete the tournament series.
