Locking horns with our local rivals East Rainton in the Vinton trophy was always going to be an exciting game. Both sides have had differing fortunes this year and both would want to win this game especially with a double weekend of league fixtures coming up. A place in the semi-final of the Vinton Trophy was up for grabs for the winners of the contest.
Littletown batted first and with Dan Pearson being stuck in traffic the skipper opted for a Paul Cassell and Phil Bennett combo to open the batting. In a bizarre twist of fate at the start of the game, opening bowler and East Rainton skipper Will Orchin had to take himself off after bowling 3 no-balls in the first 3 balls of the game and as such it gave us a little boost as we knew how dangerous a bowler he can be. Phil Bennett (56) anchored the innings wonderfully and allowed Cassell (21) Pearson (12) and Arundel (11*) to bat around him. Once Bennett departed with 3 overs remaining, Chris Pringle entered the show and carried on where he left off on Tuesday against Coundon, dispatching no fewer than 4 sixes in the final over of our innings. Pringles foray enabled us to climb to 147-3 on what was a good batting track but large ground.
The Vinton is a 2 bowler competition and Paul Cassell bowled a tremendous spell of 10 overs during the East Rainton innings. His destructive spell saw him reach figures of 5-45 rounding off his performance catching T.Rennie (34) off his own bowling. He was supported by Luke Hutchinson who added another 3 wickets to his tally and Storey/Ledger also bowled well to keep the East Rainton innings to 104-9 off 20 overs. A great win for Littletown and the start of a big double weekend winning by 43 runs.
