Llanfairpwll 1-0 Llandegfan (Anglesey League)
MANY had expected this 'Llan Derby' to be a walkover after Llanfair eased to a 7-0 win when the two sides met at Lon Ty Newydd earlier on in the season.
However, that most certainly was not the case as Llandeg put in a spirited performance which deserved at least a point.
Played on what was a nice enough afternoon at Maes Eilian, both teams struggled to find any sort of momentum early on and so it was no surprise to see the game go into half time at 0-0.
Llandeg's only real chance came when Def Parry was through on goal, before being felled by an opposition defender - a move which many thought could have lead to a penalty, but the referee waved play on.
In the second half, Llanfair began to step it up a gear and were looking ever more dangerous on the break. Vinny Walker and Spud Thomas' side rattled the crossbar and the right hand post, before narrowly missing another golden opportunity.
It looked for all the world as though Llandeg would be heading for at least a point but late heartbreak was about to ensue once more.
In the 86th minute the ball came over the top from the right to Llanfair left back Owain Davies who was unmarked (and seemingly some way offside) who then fired home past Geth Griffith in goal. Despite some protest, the goal stood.
That wasn't the end of it however - Llandeg went onto spurn a match-saving opportunity right at the death. Substitute Josh Royds finding himself through on goal but his decent effort was denied by 16-year-old goalkeeper Carwyn Hughes, who produced a great save, before a goal-line clearance denied him again with the rebound.
Late drama, but unfortunately nothing to savour once again for Arron Evans' side as they fell to another defeat.
After the match, the manager said: "This was a harsh one for us as we really did deserve a draw in my opinion but we switched off late on and whether or not the goal was offside doesn’t matter - we switched off.
“That said, you have to look at the positives and there were plenty there for us to take away. I’ve never seen us concede just the one goal in a game during my time here and we were minutes away from a clean sheet.
“The lads listened to what I had to say before the game and at half time and were very unfortunate not to be rewarded. The main thing is that we’re beginning to concede less goals and I think that’s huge for us in the long run.
“I’m proud of the boys today, they’re beginning to show that Llandeg aren’t just here to make up the numbers. This is the most optimistic I’ve been about our team and I’m looking forward to the next few matches, starting with Valley at home next Saturday.”
