Unfortunately, due to an extremely wet January, and therefore a very wet Mount Field, a lot of home games were postponed early in the year including the annual first game of the year which is normally the Central Wales Cup. Instead, Llanfair played Bow Street in February on the 3G pitch at Latham Park, winning 6-1.
In the league, Llanfair began the year fighting relegation and points on the board were desperately needed. At Porthmadog, they lost 6-1 however wins against Mold away and Rhayader at Latham Park, gave Llanfair a boost going into February. In the league cup, Llanfair lost 4-1 to Gresford again at Latham Park.
The Reserves who went into the new year top of the league, beat Llanfechain away 7-2 and managed to play against Penparcau at home in the Emrys Morgan Cup last 16, winning 2-0. The Ladies also managed to play twice, beating Newtown away at Latham Park in the Central Wales Cup and they picked up a very creditable draw against Caernarfon at home. Newtown's Latham Park was the venue once again in January when the Youths lost 2-1 in their Central Wales Cup tie.

In February, it was a tale of postponements again. The first team went three weeks without a league game due to bad weather with postponements at home to Holywell and Flint away for which they got to Flint for but last minute torrential rain causes a postponement. At the beginning of the month, a 1-0 loss away to Gresford was hard to take but then a 2-0 loss at home to Caersws at the end of the month was a bitter pill to swallow due to the fact they were relegation rivals as well as local.
February turned out to be an important month for the Reserves. A 3-2 win at fellow league title rivals Morda was a brilliant result and helped Llanfair create a gap at the top between them and the rest of the league. Also, after being postponed twice at home, the Reserves had to travel to Llangrannog to take on Crannog in the Quarter final of the Emrys Morgan Cup. In an amazing first half, Llanfair took a 3-0 lead and held on in the second to win 3-2 and book their place in the semi-final.
The Ladies only managed to play one game, a good 4-1 win at Point Ladies and the Youths didn't manage to play at all. February also saw the club lose three big players from recent seasons; Lee Andrew (Guilsfield), Ross Frame (Oakleigh Cannons in Australia) and Richard Ainsley (Brymbo).

It was a mixed month in March for the first team. They narrowly lost to eventual runners up Cefn Druids at home before losing 2-1 to Buckley in another relegation battle. However, wins in the Montgomeryshire Cup at Kerry and then a big 2-1 win at home to Prestatyn on a horrendous day of weather meant that Llanfair went into the final stage of the season with optimism. The win meant Llanfair did the league double over the Seasiders which was seen as a big achievement for the club considering Prestatyn were playing in Europe less than 3 years ago. Unfortunately though, Llanfair went out of the Central Wales Cup, when the Reserves had to represent the club, losing 4-3 to Abermule.
March proved to be a pinnacle month for the Reserves. They picked up to important league wins against Llanfyllin and Trefonen and after the first attempt was postponed, they beat Dewi Stars 2-0 at Llanidloes in the semi-final of the Emrys Morgan thanks to a great free kick by Josh Astley and a cool finish by Ashley Davies.
The final at Penrhyncoch on Easter Friday was to be a momentous one. In the first half, Llanfair were battered by Llandysul but somehow managed to take the lead through Toby Evans just before half time. In the second half, Llandysul continued in the same way, having a goal disallowed before a heart stopping final few minutes. In the 90th minute, Llandysul were awarded a penalty for which Daniel Isaac was shown a red for a professional foul. Chris Humphreys heroically saved the penalty before Llanfair went up the other end to score a cup clinching goal through Toby Evans' to spark wild celebrations from the Llanfair players and excellent travelling supporters. It was Llanfair's 5th Emrys Morgan cup win which has extended the record.
The Ladies had a good month, picking up a 1st leg win against Aber Uni Ladies in the semi final of the Central Wales Cup. They also beat Airbus ladies 3-2 but lost 2-0 to Caernarfon. The Youths suffered a blow to their title hopes when they lost 4-1 to Welshpool.
Off the pitch, Llanfair were awarded an amazing £48,000 towards ground improvements thanks to the WGI grant. The money would be put towards improving drainage, a new stand and pitch lengthening.
(Reserves win the Emrys Morgan Trophy)
April proved to be a very disappointing month for the first team, losing all seven league games during a disheartening month. Loses against top of the table sides Holyhead, Holywell, Caernarfon (twice) Flint and Denbigh were almost expected but it was the loss against fellow relegation rivals Conwy which ultimately sealed their fate as their 15th place finish was confirmed.
The Reserves picked up only two wins from four in the league as they made it difficult to win the league title. Wins against Llanfechain and Llanymynech were met by losses against Waterloo Reserves and Guilsfield Reserves. In the league cup, they found themselves 3-1 up against Morda with 10 minutes to go and disappointingly lost 4-3.
The Ladies also had a mixed month, losing league games against Bethel and Amlwch but they beat Kinmel Bay 5-1 away. It was also mixed feelings in the cup competitions as they beat Aber Uni Ladies 5-1 in the 2nd leg of the Central Wales Cup semi final but lost 1-0 to Amlwch Ladies in the league cup.
The Youths had a good month in the league and secured their place in the semi final playoffs with wins against Llanfyllin and Machynlleth. They were left disappointed though, losing 4-3 to Welshpool in an entertaining League cup semi-final.

After a mainly disappointing month for all four teams, May proved to be more joyful. The first team ended their season with a loss to Holywell at home but were spared relegation due to a lack of teams being promoted to the league and South Wales sides being relegated from the WPL. Llanfair then went on an enjoyable cup run in the Montgomeryshire Cup, beating Guilsfield 3-1 and then Llanidloes 1-0 in the semi final, setting up a repeat final from the year before against Carno. The game was played at Carno after agreement by both clubs and it was watch by a bumper crowd on a hot May afternoon. Matt Spencer put Llanfair ahead with a header in the first half. Former Llanfair player Geraint Jones equalised for Carno before Paul Griffiths put Llanfair back ahead with a long range strike. James Davies settled the win late on to retain the trophy for Llanfair.
The Reserves made it hard for themselves in the league but one win from their final three games was enough to secure the league title. A Tanners Town Cup defeat to Waterloo in the semi final couldn't really dampen spirits after a league and Emrys Morgan cup double.
The Ladies finished by winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 3 of their final 5 league games. They took on Aberystwyth Ladies in a memorable Central Wales Cup final at Llanidloes. Llanfair spurned a number of chances in the normal time but also defended very well to take the game to extra time. In extra time, Llanfair missed a penalty before the Welsh Premier side took the lead and eventually won the cup 1-0. On the same day, at the same venue, the Youths took on Llanidloes in the semi-final of the Youth League Play off. After an entertaining game, the score was 2-2 and the game went to penalties. In a very memorable shoot-out, Llanidloes won 10-9 on penalties to stop Llanfair from winning the league three years in a row.
Off the pitch, work began on putting in a new drainage system using the WGI grant money. The work completed consisted of sand slitting, verti-draining, top dressing, drag matting and re-seeding Mount Field.

In July, each team began preparing for the new season ahead. Work was also done to the changing rooms and surrounding area.
New signings were made by the first team ahead of the new Cymru Alliance season. Nashawn Blake (Aberystwyth), Nyasha Mwamuka (TNS) and Dan Kenyon (Carno) were all brought in to bolster the squad.
A mixed start to the season in August for the first team. A loss to Denbigh on the first day and a defeat to Gresford were disappointing but a draw at Flint and a 2-1 win against Penrhyncoch were very pleasing.
The Reserves won the Tegwyn Evans cup against Newtown Rovers before losing to Llanfyllin, drawing at Meifod and beating Llanrhaeadr Reserves. The Ladies started well drawing at Pwllheli and beating Bethel .
(Reserves win Tegwyn Evans Cup)
In September, the first team were unlucky against Porthmadog and Prestatyn and picked up two important wins against Guilsfield away and Buckley at home. They then lost to Holyhead towards the end of the month.
The Reserves beat Morda before drawing at Guilsfield and losing at Caersws. They then lost to Waterloo in the town cup quarter final.
The Ladies had an excellent month beating Northop Hall 8-0, Bangor 16-0 and Brickfield 8-0. They also beat Brickfield in an entertaining Welsh Cup tie which ended 3-2 to Llanfair. The Youths began their season with two huge wins against Llanfyllin (4-0) and Machynlleth (10-1).
(Firsts unlucky in defeat against Porthmadog)
October proved to be a more successful month for the first team. They began with a 2-0 win at Llanidloes in the Welsh Cup. They then lost to Flint in the league cup and to Mold in the league but drew at home to Conwy and then shocked everyone with a 4-2 win at reigning champions Caernarfon.
Not a good month for the Reserves as they lost 3 league games on the bounce but beat Llanrhaeadr Reserves at home. The Ladies had another good month. After a loss at home to Caernarfon, they won their other two league games and beat Amlwch in the Welsh Cup. The Youths continued their good form too, winning two league games and they put in a great performance against TNS in the Welsh Cup, only losing 2-0 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
(Ladies beat Amlwch in the Welsh Cup)
The First team continued their fine form into November. After going down 3-0 in the first half of the Welsh Cup away to Flint, they turned the game on its head to win 4-3 to book a 3rd round place. They also beat Ruthin 1-0 in the league.
The Reserves had another tricky month, losing both league games against Meifod and Llanfyllin before losing to Llanfyllin again in the Emrys Morgan Cup to halt any chances of retaining the title. However they did beat Llanfechain 11-0 in the league cup.
The Ladies continued their league form into November with two wins over Amlwch and Bangor Ladies. They travelled to Rhyl in the FAW Welsh Cup and put a good performance against the WPL side but lost 3-0. The Youths drew 4-4 against Llanfyllin and beat Newtown Youths in the league cup.
Off the pitch, Rhys and Aled represented the club at the FAW Awards in Cardiff to pick up the FAW Fair Play award they received the previous season.
(Paul Griffiths scores against Corwen in the Welsh Cup)
This month, in December, Llanfair began brilliantly with a 1-0 over Corwen in the Welsh Cup to book their place in the 4th round for the first time in the club's history. However, poor league form has seen Llanfair lose to Caersws, Gresford and Penrhyncoch.
The Reserves drew to Caersws Reserves and beat Berriew Reserves whilst the Ladies had a rocky month, losing two league games and but won in the Central Wales Cup against Welshpool. The Youths booked their place in the next round of the Central Wales Cup too with a resounding 10-2 win over Newtown.
So, plenty to look forward to in the new year; The first team look to bolster their mid table position in the Cymru Alliance whilst they still compete in the 4th round of the Welsh Cup, the Central Wales Cup and the Montgomeryshire Cup.
The Reserves are still in the league cup and look to finish in mid table. The Ladies are still challenging for the title and are still in the league cup and Central Wales Cup whilst the Youths look towards the league title and both the league and Central Wales cups.
Everyone at the club would like to wish all of our supporters, players, committee and opponents a Happy New Year for 2017!
