This weekend saw Llanfyllin return to winning ways against a very hard working Trefonen team.

The first half was pretty even with both teams having some decent possession and a couple of half chances, but nothing clear cut. As the half progressed the magpies began applying slightly more pressure and becoming the controlling team. However, Trefonen remained defiant through some very committed defending.

The visitors did carve out some good shooting opportunities, the best falling to young Aaron Davies at the back post who saw his volleyed shot block. Davies had a few more decent efforts and seemed to be getting most of the joy down the left. Although the first major talking point and eventual goal came from the right hand side through chairman and Nash.

After some good passing Nash found himself surging into the box only to seemingly be brought down for a penalty. The referee disagreed and didn’t give it, fortunately the ball fell into the path of another Llanfyllin player who’s shot was turned around for a corner. With Llanfyllin understandably aggrieved the corner was delivered but ran harmlessly through only for Martin Phillips to retrieve the ball and redeliver. Trefonen dealt well with a dangerous ball, before the ball fell on the edge of the area for Llanfyllin midfielder Sam Jones supplied a piece of magic. As the ball came to the edge of the area Sam ran on to meet the ball and swept the ball expertly into the far top corner going in off the post, giving the magpies the lead through a truly fantastic goal.

It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled, with Llanfyllin starting to dominate a ball in from Jack Morris landed at the feet of Nash about 15 yards out who turned and got his shot away and found the far corner again, putting Llanfyllin 2-0 up going into the break.

The second half began in the same way as the first finished with Llanfyllin in control. It could have been 3-0 and game over within 5 minutes, as Zakh Ward found Nash who ran in one-on-one before unluckily looping his shot over the bar. 5 minutes later saw another chance for the visitors as this time Lee Morris found himself one-on-one with the goal keeper only to be denied by the goal keepers trailing leg.

This was the last chance Llanfyllin had in the game as Trefonen fought back and began putting the magpies under a lot of pressure. With Trefonen having a spell of dominance Llanfyllin brought on the returning Ryan Jones to provide extra cover and experience in seeing the game out.

It was a nervy last 20 minutes for Llanfyllin as Trefonen did manage to get one goal back. A good ball in saw the striker challenge Dan Whittal before managing to tap the knock down into the empty net, there were shouts for a foul on the goal keeper but much like the penalty the referee wasn’t interested.

The magpies showed good battling spirit however, and saw the remaining minutes out and managed to record their first league victory of the new year.
Next week see Llanfyllin play host to Llangedwyn in a must win game for a team looking to improve their league positioning.
