The consistent back five continued with Prince in goal, Edwards, Whitehouse, Phillips and Whyte starting in defence. Captain Matt Jones was joined by Lee Rogers and Lewis Williams in central midfield. The front three also had a familiar feel to it with Grant Jones, Sam Roberts and Michael Edwards all playing up front.
The visitors were Carno Reserves who play in the divison below Llanymynech and the difference in class showed on this gloomy Tuesday evening. Llanymynech got an early lead through a shot from the edge of the area, Edwards collected the ball and found Lee Rogers who hit a shot which looped over the keeper and into the back of the net. A great strike which set the tone for the early stages. Llany soon doubled their lead from a set piece as Sam Roberts whipped in a corner to the front post which was met by left back Callum Whyte, he managed to volley home from close range.
Carno then ramped up the pressure with several long throws and corner kicks without really creating any major chances. The backline of Llany organising well to prevent any problems. It did however disrupt the home sides momentum and they went into half time a little flat despite having a two goal lead.
After a short break however Llany extended their lead through a fantastic free kick from top scorer Sam Roberts. His well hit shot found the top right corner of the net.
He could’ve added a second soon after when a great ball from Grant Jones down the right found him 6 yards out but his shot was cleared when it looked like it may have been over the goal line. The referee ruled no goal but Roberts wasn’t to be denied for long. As a high floating cross from Whyte on the left hand side found the head of Roberts, for him to score his 12th goal of the season.
Nick Joyce, Chris Grommell, Jack Watkin and Rob Jones all entered the action to show how strong the squad was on the day and it was the latter who provided the next goal of the game. Jones hit a speculative drive fro 25 yards which caught dust as it bobbled along the floor, inexplicably the goal keeper left it and as it rebounded against the post Michael Edwards was on hand to place the ball into the net for his tenth of the season.
The final goal of the game came courtesy of a well placed finish from range from Lewis Williams who took advantage of a pocket of space just outside the box to fire home. The action wasn’t over however as Rob Jones had a goal ruled offside when his shot came back off the bar and Matt Prince had to make a superb save from our own Jack Edwards to retain the clean sheet and see us safely through to the semi finals.
