Llanymynech competed in their first cup final since their reformation as they travelled to Berriew to face Berriew Reserves in the Consolation Cup.

The same back five continued at the back with Matt Prince starting in goal, Jack Edwards was joined by Jamie Phillips, Mike Whitehouse and Callum Whyte in the defensive line. Captain Matty Jones looked to continue his unbeaten run as captain in midfield and Lewis Williams and Lee Rogers completed the central midfield three. Grant Jones regained his place in the side with Sam Roberts also playing out wide and on form striker Michael Edwards led the line.

In truth this was a match of few clear cut chances for the large support to cheer about but it was a determined start by the reds as they looked to gain control of the final. On a bobbly pitch Matt Prince had to be on his toes with back passes as he dealt well with an onrushing striker, and also got down well to prevent a Berriew forward touching the ball underneath him. It seemed that set pieces would be Llany’s best way to score as Sam Roberts threatened with a couple of deliveries from out wide. Lewis Williams was unfortunate to see his header go just over the bar and Roberts had a tame effort saved but in truth the battle was in the middle of the park in the first half and so the sides went in all square.

As the second half kicked off Berriew had made three changes which gave them the upper hand in the early exchanges. They shot wide on a few occaisions and Prince had to be ready to make a smart catch but all in all the defence was holding strong. Chris Grommell and Jack Watkin came on to add more threat from set plays and Semi Final match winner Nick Joyce also entered the battlefield. As the game got more stretched Rob Jones was brought on to give Llany more energy in midfield and it was not long after where the break through in the game was made.

In truth neither side had threatened the keeper very often in the match. Jack Watkin saw a free kick go just over and Chris Grommell had seen a long range free kick saved but it was from a corner which the deadlock was broken, Jack Watkin who has already scored directly from a corner twice this season made it three as his in-swinging effort caught the goalkeeper out and hit the stanchion and bounced back out. It was a brilliant hit and sparked jubilant celebrations on and off the pitch.

Ben Graham joined the action to help out defensively on the right hand side as Llany began to shut up shop. Berriew inevitably had more of the ball in the final 15 minutes and saw a late header just go wide of the post and the wrong footed Prince in the final seconds but Llanymynech did enough to hold onto their one goal lead.

It was a scrappy win, not one for the football purist but all that mattered is that Llanymynech had their first trophy in 21 years and Josh Haywards men’s celebrations could commence.

We’d like to thank everyone who came down on the day to offer fantastic support to cheer the lads on, we hope you enjoyed your day. We certainly enjoyed it.
