Lostwithiel beat North Petherwin 2-1 away to go top of the Duchy 1 table

Lostwithiel lost the toss and were made to play with the strong wind at their backs in the first half. The home side got into their stride very quickly but Lostwithiel settled shortly after and were able to take charge of the game. This was always going to be a tough half for North Petherwin due to the strong wind which made clearing the ball very difficult. The away side were dominating possession and looked particularly threatening down both flanks, which in turn led to several excellent chances to score. Just like the previous week the chances came and were spurned, with a lot of credit going to the home goalkeeper who was having a stormer to keep Lostwithiel at bay. It was backs to wall job for the hosts but they were able to weather the storm and get in at half time with the score at 0-0, although in reality Lostwithiel could and perhaps should have been 3-0 up!

After a superb first half display with no reward to show for our efforts the second half started and we quickly realised how much of a factor the wind would have on us defensively. However, despite the home side having more of the ball in the opposition half, Lostwithiel adjusted well to the conditions and continued to be the more impressive of the two sides. The movement of the ball on the deck and the switching of play was proving very successful for the away side and before too long they deservedly took the lead after Ben WIlkinson smashed home from close range thanks to an assist from James Hutchings. Tails were up and Lostwithiel continued to press whereas North Petherwin also made advances towards goal but any half chances were being dealt with by the away defence. With around 20 minutes to go Lostwithiel made it 0-2 after a terrific moved started down the right found Tom Grylls on the edge of the box who swivelled and struck a superb shot at goal which was pushed away by the goalkeeper, falling to James Hutchings who controlled and drove the ball low into the far corner. The game looked to be over but North Pethwerwin were able to grab an unlikely consolation goal after a through ball was not dealt with and the left winger forced and angle to unleash a great strike for 1-2. Lostwithiel were able to see out the game to record a thoroughly deserved victory which in fairness could have been a more convincing scoreline based on the amount of chances created. Conceding a late goal slightly took the gloss off what was a superb overall performance but two away wins from the opening two games will no doubt give us the confidence to build on this impressive start to the season.

Thanks to all the North Petherwin boys as always, gracious in defeat and no doubt they will bounce back and cause problems for many sides in this division.
