Loughborough U11s at the County Cup, Market Harborough Sunday April 25th
Sunday saw the U11s finish their season with a disappointing showing in the County Cup. Having gone there with high hopes those hopes were dashed in the few frantic minutes that these Tournament games allow. The difference between winning and losing is usually very slight in Tournament competition and any lead is difficult to overcome in the short period of time allowed.
This was amply demonstrated on Sunday as the U11s faced Lutterworth in their first game. Boro dominated possession for much of the game, but could not make the telling break. Lutterworth were happy to defend, moving Boro from side to side across the pitch and then when they did seize possession in the second half they found a man over on the right wing and he was in for the deciding score. Try as they did Boro were unable to come back, the Lutterworth midfield stifling all attempts by Boro to cross the gain line.
The second game was against Market Harborough. The first half was an attritional battle, the teams appearing to take it in turns to attack and defend, with defence coming out the clear winner. In the second half Harborough forced a turnover close to the Boro line and then squeezed over for a short distance try. Boro had a chance to come back when Harborough were caught offside defending their line but the ball was spilt in the surge to the line, and the chance disappeared as the final whistle went.
Leicester Forest East lined up as the opponents in the final group game. They moved the ball slickly across their back line and scored after only a couple of minutes. The move was repeated again and again and only scrambling defence by Boro kept them out on a number of occasions, but as half time approached LFE worked another overlap on the right and added a second. Boro matched the opposition in the second half but were unable to break through a stout defence.
