Lye had to settle for a share of the points as they were held 1-1 by fellow title contenders Gornal Ahtletic (North).
The game started slowly with both sides looking sluggish. It was Gornal who had the first effort on goal in the 4th minute, forcing Irvine to make an excellent double save. Lye's first attempt on goal came in the 10th minute with Falconer's speculative half-volley going wide.
Neither side managed to take control of the game, although Lye enjoyed slightly more of the possession without putting the Gornal backline under pressure. Lye couldn't get their usual slick passing into gear, instead opting for a more direct approach that Gornal managed to contain. The next notable Lye attack came after 25th minute when Sharp struck a volley wide of the post.
Gornal didn't offer much in the way off attacking play, but when they did, the Lye backline marshalled them very well indeed. In the 30th minute, Clarke tried a long range effort on goal that unfortunately didn't test the keeper. A minute later, Parsons narrowly headed over the bar after Gornal had conceded a soft corner. In the 35th minute Lye went close when Collins shot narrowly cleared the bar. The last action of the half saw Lye produce their best piece of passing play of the whole game. The ball eventually found it's way to Clarke whose shot was well held by the keeper to end a tight first half at 0-0.
The second half didn't spark into life with both sides locked in a midfield battle. Lye began to become frustrated, particularly at some of the physical challenges from Gornal that went unpunished. This contributed in disrupting Lye's performance somewhat as it became a little bit disjointed.
Gornal had the first chance of the half following a good move, which ended up going wide. Lye continued to battle away and again, had more of the possession, but couldn't break through the Gornal defence with any conviction.
The game wore on with Lye getting more frustrated and somewhat against the run of play, Gornal broke away and scored in the 69th minute. This kick-started Lye into action who went on to dominate the last 10 minutes. In the 71st minute, Sharp did brilliantly to break through but his shot unfortunately clipped the post and went out. Two minutes later, and Sharp did will again to beat the keeper, only to see his shot go agonizingly over the bar.
As Lye pushed for the equaliser, they were caught out on break again. The Gornal striker burst through on goal but was denied by an excellent save from Irvine in the 77th minute. Lye quickly turned this into attack and the ball eventually fell to Morris who was brought down outside the Gornal box. Mungaba's free kick into the box was mis-cleared by Gornal and the ball eventually fell to Allen who slotted home the equaliser in the 79th minute, to rescue a 1-1 draw and a share of the points.
A very indifferent performance from Lye, which lacked the spark and creativity of previous games. Gornal were a strong, physical side who had no intention of rolling over. Maybe there wasn't enough respect offered to an opponent who are still in the title race? However, despite of that, Lye still produced more efforts on goal than their opponent and should have capitalised on them. Profligacy in front of goal could cost Lye dearly, especially how tight it is at the top of the table.
However, Lye showed character to bounce back from going a goal behind and destiny is still in their own hands.
Man of the match went to Kyle Allen.
